To Allegra's comment, while America has the best colleges, Asia's examination system cannot be compared with the course load of America's best (maybe the IB). Even the most rigorous fully loaded AP course work and elite Academy's are a caske walk in comparison. Some of my German friends who spent a year in the US in high school told me that it was the easiest year of their life and they suffer for it when they get back. The difference is of course for Western Europe and for Asia, once you're in the best of the best schools, there's little in terms of intellectual engagement (at least that's what's been reported by my European and Asian friends). Finally in Asia, students are expected to be students, and just that -- extra cirricular activities are looked down upon. It is not atypical for students to start their day in class at 7am and finish their studies (including 8-10 hours of homework) at 2am -- as witnessed by me when visiting my 10 year old Taiwanese cousin in the middle of

So wonderful to see Mr. Brown back doing what he does so well...

I watched part of the Education in China episode tonight. The workload seems about equivalent to that of the hardworking student's in America's top high schools. I am aware that many/most American high schoolers don't work hard and that many/most of America's schools are fairly bad, though. The Wide Angle website offers a few questions from Gaokao, and none of them are very difficult.

Perspectives from other students?

One other thing: in America, one's future is extremely dependent on one's class, one's upbringing, and what test prep classes one took. I suppose that isn't true in China?

It made me thinking about the education system in China, I have taken Gaokao, the college entrance exam that can exclusively determine the future of each student in this nation. I don't think it is proper way. Anyway, people will find an other way to relief the over-heavy burden on these young guys` shoulder, I believe.

Aaron Brown
Plot Outline:
WIDE ANGLE was created in 2001 as a response to the lack of in-depth international news coverage in the United States. Six years later, WIDE ANGLE is the only program exclusively dedicated to international current affairs documentaries. For each broadcast, producers and journalists from around the globe report on an event, issue or trend through the eyes of the people who are living it day to day. In its first six seasons, WIDE ANGLE traveled to more than 50 countries to explore the forces that... (read more)
