Wilkes County was pivotal in the development of NASCAR, and we are beyond thrilled to return to our roots.
Make your plans now to come spend the first week of O...ctober 2010 in Wilkes, and enjoy the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival, as well as the return of racing to the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway!

A FREE walk in the waterfowl impoundment area at W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir, a site on the NC Birding Trail, with a birding expert. All walks start at 9 am, and will last approximately 3 hours. Birding instructor, guide, and Piedmont Birding Club member Rob Rogers will be leading the walks. Wilkesboro Tourism Develo...pment Authority director Jodi Frichner will also be on hand for the walks to answer questions about the area and provide recommendations. Walks are open to birders of all levels from beginner to expert. All walks are free to the public, however, space is limited and reservations are required. Wilkes NC Tourism Old Fashioned Day at Whippoorwill Academy & Village 9/5, starting at 11:00 am with a worship service in the charming log cabin Chapel of Peace. Following the service, tours of the restored log cabin village will be offered. The Village includes a one-room schoolhouse built in 1880 where North Carolina's Poet Laureate, Larkin Pearson attended school.
