Williams Selyem Check out the great article on Wine Review Online. Columnist Ed McCarthy also tasted and reviewed 12 Williams Selyem Pinots from the 2007 vintage. Highest ranked wines include the Rochioli Riverblock - 95 points, Hirsch - 97 points, and Precious Mountain - 98. Good to see others as excited as we are about the 07 vintage!!

The wine pickup at Millbrook is always a bellwether event in our fall.

This year was perhaps better than most. The cool weather and mostly bare trees set the scene for a great drive up the Taconic Parkway. If you have the room to carry the wine loot you've ordered, it's best to take your sportiest car. We drove up in our 2003 Mini cooper S.

After the gracious and informative tasting we zipped over to the Red Devon in Bengall for lunch with friends and relatives who live in the area. Then we hiked their just bought 15 acres of woodland in Amenia with K.D. our field trained wire-haired dachsy. In addition to flushing all sorts of game she picked up a pack of burrs.... See More

I brought a last spring's WS rose and a couple of dozen oysters for the appetizer and then we feasted with a 1997 Olivet and braised lamb shanks. Heaven in Dutchess County. Music from <<http://www.livefromdarylshouse.com/index.php?page=ep24>> just up the hill.

Looking to celebrate Thanksgiving with a bottle or two or perhaps a magnum of WS's superb zin.

Rob Preston Any more thoughts, on 2008/2009 vintage. From all I have read, 2008 will be one of the lowest yielding crops of the last decade, resulting highly concentrated and challenging wines. Seems like the extreme Sonoma Coast (Peay, Hirsch, Precious Mountain, Coastlands) really had a challenge with the smoke, rain, heat and j...ust crazy overall weather. These could be some of the most interesting and mind-blowing wines. If 2007 was picture perfect, 2008 kept them on their toes.

I've read that the 2008 vintage was challenged by unprecedented spring frost (about 2 weeks in one nonth).
This brought yields as low as 2 tons per acre especially in the Mendicino area.
The grapes were small but concentrated, and while the yield was low, the wine is supposed have good intensity and will be great for aging.
Of course, this could just be marketing--haven't tried this vintage.

I'm concerned about the smoke issues in the Sonoma Coast. At least one other highly regarded colifornia Pinot Noir poducer I know of has de-classified the majority of his 2008 Sonoma Coast fruit.
