There are many mixed emotions involved here. And as many questions.

PW2 Web FourSquare initial review.

FourSquare.com is a good idea that is still in its infancy. I see a lot
of potential beyond the initial mission, especially for travellers
looking for something local and off-the-beaten path.

Unfortunately
for now, FourSquare contains more than a few reviews that appear to be
less than unbiased. Fo...urSquare will be very useful if they can figure
out a way to filter out the ads masquerading as reviews.

I'm not
anti-advertising and would not mind seeing ads and specials on a
business page. When advertising attempts to disguise itself as a
review, well… that's a different story....

I will check in again with FourSquare in 6 months and let you know what I find.

In the meantime, buyer beware.

PW2 Web S'MTuesday: If you want to find out which way the wind is blowing in social media keep an eye on the independent political blogs over the next year. Where are they going? Look in terms of both blogger-generated content and user-generated content (comments). I have a gut feeling on what's going to happen, backed up by ...a little data so far, but I'm not in the job of making predictions.

PW2 Web It is Anti-Bullying Week in the UK. Here are Facebook's suggestions for prevention and cures.

Do you think bullying and anti-social behavior are getting worse on Social Media (S'M) such as Facebook and Twitter? I know, that is a huge question with no easy answer. I would just like to hear personal opinions and observations.

PW2 Web Word of the Year, according to the New Oxford American Dictionary...

I and many others thought the term was "defriend" or "de-friend", but if Oxford says "unfriend" I guess that's what it is.

No, wait a minute. I like "defriend" and I'm sticking with it. Makes more sense to me. One "de"s something that once was, like d...ecaffeinates. One does not uncaffeinate.

I have yet to have the experience of defriending anyone, though.

PW2 Web S'MTuesday: Can people please stop using the word "retard" in their S'M? I dislike censorship and I dislike the word police, but "retard" is not funny, never has been funny, and says a lot more about the speakers and their upbringing than anything else. I think Howard Stern still uses it, but that's only because he ra...n out of new material many years ago. That's it for today. That's all I ask.

The goal of Thriv'AbleThursday is to look for ways innovative way to manage our connected and disconnected world - and integrate both worlds.

Readability works well rendering articles from the three major Web sites I tried: NYTim...es.com, CNN.com, and Cleveland.com. It has trouble with the first pages, though, as only the latest blurbs are displayed.

PW2 Web S'MTuesday: S'MT is my shorthand for Social Media Trends. This will be a weekly feature here.

Today is Election Day in the U.S. Early on, in late September and early October, I had trouble finding solid, reliable information on some of the issues on our local ballot. It was a bit disconcerting to see one of the top s...earch results was a blog with an unprofessional title.

Google's new "Social Search" experiment may help with this problem.

"What we've done here is inserted, on the bottom of the page, content
written by people in your social network," Mayer said, adding that
Google hopes this will "really improve the overall relevance,
comprehensiveness, and quality" of search results."

If this works, when you search for, say, "Ohio Issue 1 2009" the results will include comments and blog posts written by members of your network.

Content from your social network can show up in your Google search queries--as well as Twitter results--in the company's second announcement of the day. Read this blog post by Caroline McCarthy on The Social.
