Wine For Newbies

Wine For Newbies Did you ever have the experience of stirring up a huge mess for a friend, and then try to clean it up? That's where I've been for the last few weeks. Just when I think things have settled down, something else flares up. I swear I should have gone to firefighters' school. Anyway, between trying to clean up the mess, str...essing out about the thing, and the rest of life, WFN has been delayed too long.

More like a hot toddy tonight. Head cold centered in the sinus to the left of the nose. Ugh.

There's one book that is a hands-down absolutely fabulous wine course on paper. I ignored it for ten years, and I could kick myself. Find out why you don't want to make the same mistake.

It's harvest time in California's Napa Valley, and the rows of vines that line the meandering Silverado Trail are laden with fat, lush clusters of grapes.

Wine For Newbies The only sparkling wine I have in the cellar is a bottle of Mumm Napa sparkling Pinot Noir (one of their mailing list-only things). This bottle doesn't count. We must fix this problem!

The bigger problem is I'll have to wait until at least Monday to fix the lack-of-sparkling-wine problem because of Indiana's antiquated alcohol laws...and I'm not driving to Chicago in this weather.

Wine For Newbies My Christmas report: A bottle of 1998 Dom Perignon. Mind you, this is not a wine that we have very often at all. When I can find it for well under the typical price, I might pick it up. (I saw bottles of '96 going for $100 today...I may have to go back since it's normally $140 to $160 in my area.)

There's no question this is a very nice Champagne, and the aromas and flavors are terrific. Is it a good value? I'd actually rather buy three or four bottles of the Duval-Leroy NV for the same amount of money. But once in a while it's fun to pull out a bottle of Dom when friends or family are over. I'm lucky to be able to share it with them.

And no, I am not handing out directions to my house! :-)
