Virginia S. Wood, Psy.D. nothing works today. Blogger wouldn't "Save", and then wouldn't posts updates to my fan page. My cursor skips wildly all over my screen, no rhyme or reason (dang, it just did it again). Mozilla Firefox has been crashing right and left all week. I get HTML where I don't want it, and can't get it where I do. AARRGGHH!! I'm quitting and going to bed.

My Mom's Dad had three war stories. In the first, he is marching toward the front when his squad passes through an olive grove. He claims that he'd always loved olives and so began picking them from trees near the road, carrying them in his helmet and eating them on the march...

Virginia S. Wood, Psy.D. There are lots of us out here who could help returning soldiers cope with war trauma; the military does not have to depend upon its own mental health staff to do this, but for some reason it chooses to. Guarantee you any one of us (lots of whom are veterans--combat veterans even) could do a heckuva lot better job than Maj. Hasan.

Virginia S. Wood, Psy.D. Yes, it turns out Hasan was in treatment for alcoholism. Hindsight being 20/20, I think it's easy to say he shouldn't have been practicing.

Virginia S. Wood, Psy.D. The more I see on the news, the more I think Hasan might have been mentally ill. If he was ranting at soldiers about religion during sessions, he sure as heck wasn't competent to practice.

Maj. Hasan, Muslim, suffered 8 years harassment for it. Doesn't make what he did ok, but people continue the ugliness on FB. I've seen posts on his "weird" name, how "all" such crimes are committed by muslims (lower-case "m" because the writer doesn't "recognize" the faith), & calling Pres. Obama just as bad. Hasan was... born & raised here. We should not treat fellow citizens the way we do. It simply is not right.Read More

It is not right. It is cruel to treat any fellow human being the way people do. I would like to add that things like this happen in part because our military will not supply enough mental health experts to recognize a danger sign of a person falling apart (apathy? ignorance?) and stop things like this from happening prior to the incident.

Thank you, Dr. Wood, for standing up for diverse cultures within and without our country.

A commentator last night said exactly that--we are so short of mental health staff in the military that they appear to have kept Maj. Hasan on long after it became apparent that he was impaired.

It is so sad that these things have to happen in order for awareness to be raised. These are the things that make my heart so heavy for our country.
