- Four days of outreach will occur, starting Tuesday, November 27 and Wednesday, November 28, at the Union Drive Community Center, and ending Thursday and Friday, November 29 and 30 at the Memorial Union. Red ribbons to remember those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS in our community will be distributed. Educational materials and condoms will also be available. This event is sponsored by Students 2 Students, the campus peer health education program.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, including November 28 and 29, the Iowa State Thielen Student Health Center provides free and confidential HIV testing to all members of the Story County community from 1 to 4 pm. You do not have to be a student at ISU to use this service. This is a walk-in service on the second floor of the Thielen Student Health Center.
On Thursday, November 29, at 7 pm, a presentation will be held on ISU’s main campus on HIV and our community, presenting local community members with HIV and with a health update by Ray Rodriguez, Coordinator of Health Promotion for ISU’s Thielen Student Health Center. Location will be 2055 Hoover Hall (the large auditorium). This is being sponsored by Eta Sigma Gamma Fraternity and the Thielen Student Health Center.
Also on Thursday at 5 pm, all of the sponsoring groups will be shrouding the artwork on and around Main Street in recognition of A Day Without Art. ADWA is a visual reminder of those lost to HIV too early, and the art they cannot create. Art will remain shrouded until 5 pm on Saturday, December 1. This is being sponsored by Students 2 Students and the Student Health Advisory Committee.
The ISU AIDS Walk begins on Saturday, December 1, at the Lied Recreation Center. Speakers affected by HIV will begin speaking at 9 am, and the run will commence at 9:30 am. Walkers will begin shortly thereafter. This event is sponsored by the AIDS Walk Planning Committee.
