YWCA Dayton
The YWCA Dayton is seeking nominations for its 2010 Women of Influence Awards. This award honors women in the greater Dayton community who have made a positive impact on the lives of people in the Miami Valley through their community service.

Nominations are accepted from the community and honorees are selected by a pan...el of community leaders. Nominees do not have to be active in the YWCA. They should reflect the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women and should also exemplify community spirit, leadership, volunteerism and making a difference in the lives of others. To nominate a Woman of Influence, go to the YWCA Dayton website: www.ywcadayton.org and complete the online nomination form. Deadline to submit a nomination is Friday, December 4, 2009.

A luncheon celebration will be held on March 18, 2010 at the Dayton Convention Center to honor the award winners. For more information on tickets and sponsorship, please call Angie Hoschouer at 937-461-5550, ext. 179.

The YWCA Dayton will commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month with its annual fundraising breakfast on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 8:00am at Sinclair Community College’s Ponitz Center, Building 12. The Breakfast, entitled “Heroes and Sheroes,” will highlight the YWCA’s programs and services and recognize groups ...and individuals who have gone “above and beyond” to remedy and promote awareness of domestic violence.

The event will feature the Clothesline Project, consisting of shirts, each designed by an abuse survivor or in memory of a woman who has died as a result of abuse. The purpose of the project is four-fold: To bear witness to the survivors and victims of abuse against women; to help with the healing process for people who have lost a loved one or are survivors of abuse; to educate, document, and raise society’s awareness of this problem; and to provide a nationwide network of support, encouragement, and information.

Additionally on display will be the Silent Witness Initiative consisting of life-size silhouettes that represent women and children in our community killed by domestic violence. The collaboration between the YWCA Dayton’s Clothesline Project and the Artemis Center’s Silent Witness Initiative represents the systematic continuation of partnership efforts to educate the community about domestic violence.

The Honorary Chair of the 2009 “Heroes and Sheroes” Breakfast is longtime YWCA Dayton supporter, Marsha Bonhart, news anchor for WDTN Channel 2. There is no charge to attend the fundraising breakfast, but participants will have the opportunity to make a financial gift to the YWCA Dayton if they choose. For more information or to RSVP for the Breakfast, please call or e-mail Angie Hoschouer at 937-461-5550 x 179 or ahoschouer@ywcadayton.org. Reservations are required. Additional details are available at the YWCA Dayton website at www.ywcadayton.org.

The YWCA Dayton has a 139-year legacy of service to women and children who have turned to it in their darkest hours seeking comfort and the opportunity to rebuild their broken lives. Every day, its team addresses the most crucial needs in our community, including: domestic violence; homelessness; teen issues; childcare; affordable housing; racial justice; and self sufficiency and personal development for women.
