Yosemite, the Southern Sierra Nevada & Death Valley Cuddling up with black bears? Lynn Rogers makes it look so easy. Was it just as easy for Donna Munson, before she got eaten? http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/08/10/national/main5231708.shtml

In the wilds of northern Minnesota, bear expert Lynn Rogers teaches participants at a "wild encounters" camp about bear language, manners, and lifestyle—all while getting up close and personal with wild black bears. Video.

This is really stupid. Wild things are wild and should stay that way, and shouldn't be habituated to people and vice-versa.
Hope this idiot gets eaten.. See

Yosemite, the Southern Sierra Nevada & Death Valley
Just learned last night, by way of an email from Acapulco, that my Yosemite book got a bronze award in the guidebook category of the Lowell Thomas Awards, from the Society of American Travel Writers. And to top it off my buddy and fellow Mammoth local Christian Pondella scored a silver for one of his ice climbing shots... in Nat Geo Adventure.

"It is the premier competition in this field," says the SATW website, "like the Pulitzer Prizes for travel journalism."

I'm not sure they give bronze Pulitzers, but hey, I must say that my fleeting disappointment at not winning the gold was eased considerably--and then quickly replaced with an overwhelming sense of unworthiness--by the fact that the likes of Rolf Potts and Sebastian Junger had also, this year and last, respectively, been relegated to third place.

From what I can tell, I should get $150 out of it. Which is nice. If only I were sitting on the beach in Acapulco instead of contemplating the enormous pile of red fir rounds in the driveway, all of which need to be split or hauled under a roof before the next big early-season snowstorm hits--tonight!
