Just learned last night, by way of an email from Acapulco, that my Yosemite book got a bronze award in the guidebook category of the Lowell Thomas Awards, from the Society of American Travel Writers. And to top it off my buddy and fellow Mammoth local Christian Pondella scored a silver for one of his ice climbing shots... in Nat Geo Adventure.
"It is the premier competition in this field," says the SATW website, "like the Pulitzer Prizes for travel journalism."
I'm not sure they give bronze Pulitzers, but hey, I must say that my fleeting disappointment at not winning the gold was eased considerably--and then quickly replaced with an overwhelming sense of unworthiness--by the fact that the likes of Rolf Potts and Sebastian Junger had also, this year and last, respectively, been relegated to third place.
From what I can tell, I should get $150 out of it. Which is nice. If only I were sitting on the beach in Acapulco instead of contemplating the enormous pile of red fir rounds in the driveway, all of which need to be split or hauled under a roof before the next big early-season snowstorm hits--tonight!Read More
