Mahoning Valley Historical Society

Mahoning Valley Historical Society has local political history, Jeopardy-style (a 50th anniversary special). The answer is: after being suspended from the practice of law and removed from the Youngstown Municipal Court bench by the Ohio Supreme Court earlier in the year for ethical violations, he ran for Mayor of Youngstown on the Democratic ticket and won the general election in November 1959.

Thanks for your reply.
Were there any other local bridges with "nick names" that you are aware of?
So many "old faces" of the city have gone by the wayside, due to new construction, that I remember from the past. For instance the RR bridge that crossed Andrews Ave. It seemed like a huge tunnel when I was young.

Those bridges on Andrews Avenue carried the mainline of the Erie Railroad into downtown, and the other was for the Erie's branch to Center Street. There was a set of steps between the spans which led up to the front entrance to the William B. Pollock Co., who moved to that location in 1900. Previously the Himrod b last furnaces occupied that location.

Geography Hall is correct! The school house was built by Coitsville Township School District in 1885. And as you know, Sara, the William Holmes McGuffey homestead is just a little bit east of this crossroads on McGuffey Rd.

Mahoning Valley Historical Society has local political history, Jeopardy-style (what better day for it!). The answer is: this local Republican Party candidate gleefully said "first there was the Jets, and then there was the Mets, and now there's me!" when asked by a local reporter to summarize his "miraculous" election victory on November 4, 1969.

Love Idora History... and I remember riding the wildcat and when it burned down.... I remember riding the jack rabbit forward and when it went backward... and it makes me sad we no longer have the park! It would have been a great addition to youngstown!

I had been led to believe that the large house on the east side of South Ave. & a bit south of 224 was the McKay family's home at some point. The house is now used for other purposes.

I know the house in question--it sits on a now denuded lot between the Microtel and Clear Channel Radio--but I don't know who owned it.

Paradise is the name of the crossroads which includes the old Reformed Cemetery and what is currently Paradise United Church of Christ. The name dates back to at least 1825 when Paradise Lutheran Church, located nearby on West Western Reserve Road, was founded.
