Aprile Mickys has been cutting children's hair for over 20 years, and specializes in special needs children. Haircuts for Peanuts in Rochester, New York, has always been a fun place for children (and even their older sisters), complete... with a circus-theme and lots of toys. All of the stylists have been trained by speech and occupational therapists to work with children with autism and other special needs. Each of the hair cutting stations have toys especially for special needs children and the stylists have learned techniques to calm children who might be anxious. ""We wanted to create a place where all kids could go because I noticed there wasn't a lot of places catering to kids who might have autism or who might be fidgety," said Mickys.

New Pediatric Therapy Playroom Serves Rural Children with Autism in Arizona
Children with autism and other disabilities may be underserved in some rural areas of Arizona. To reach these children and their families, the Chiricahua Community Health Centers, Inc. (CCHCI) partnered with Children's Health Fund (CHF) to creat...e the Southern Arizona Children's Health Project (SACHP). SACHP will provide clinics as well as mobile health units to reach families who have little money and no transportation. In addition, there will be a state-of-the art Pediatric Therapy Playroom. This means that play therapy can be provided to local children in an environment filled with therapy equipment that will help with autism intervention. Parents are able to work directly with their children and the therapists. Medical Director of SACHP, Jonathan Lee-Melk, MD, states, "I believe that all children have a right to health care - period. That's something I'm not able to compromise and am willing to speak out for."

Yoga as Part of Special Education Classroom Activities
Kim Goldsmith, a special education teacher in Chicago, wanted to incorporate yoga into her classes for students with autism. She received a grant from the Fund for Teachers through the Chicago Foundation for Education that enabled her to travel to India to experienc...e first hand how yoga was incorporated into special needs classrooms. She began her internship at the Academy for Severe Handicaps and Autism (ASHA) where she saw students with autism benefit from yoga. Some of the students were non-verbal and some required assistance from aides, however, all the students used yoga to learn balance, flexibility, focus, and independence. Goldsmith spent several weeks travelling through India visiting other schools for special needs students and learning techniques to teach yoga in her Chicago classroom. Now her students begin each school day with ten minutes of meditation and yoga poses. She is beginning to see the same results with her students that she saw in India.
