Dennis L. Noble

Dennis L. Noble Would like to know where in the world a pilot has complete control of a ship, i.e., he does not need permission of the captain. I believe it is Panama Canal, Suez Canal, and perhaps St. Lawrence Seaway. Not too sure about the latter two. Thanks.

I've heard that docking masters for shipyards have full command when moving a vessel into a drydock. I could be wrong about that, though.

Just Panama.......... (and sure that docking pilot thing too)

It boils down to liability, Panama says and have covered ships they damaged and or broke. The pilot messes up Panama pays, Conversely the crew does not do what the pilot says the company will pay damages to the canal.........

In Suez...........This Never happens.... See More

The docking pilot thing, Most ship yards Can fix any thing. they also been known to break it all too. Sense there fitting the bill and know and are paid by the people that are going to put it back together............. Yea they get to play too.

Having said that, A Pilot just went to jail in San Francisco for hitting a bridge. A little rough for the "adviser" role. But USCG wants more responsibly for our over paid Pilots / advisers.
