Our son, Mark, also gave Steck Vaughn a test run, and was impressed with the fact that they explain the correct answers fully. The results page presents a side by side comparison, including answers given by the student.

iLearn in Freedom Network From the mind of Matt Hern -- author, Everywhere All the Time: A New Deschooling Reader, amongst others -- and Friends!

WHAT IS THE THISTLE? The Thistle is a youth-run arts and activism centre. We are open in the afternoons and evenings for drop-in. Please see signs on the door, big white board and website for hours. We run classes and projects of all kinds. There is lots of information available about what’s going on and how to sign u...p. If it isn’t totally obvious, ask someone. We run full-time, paid training programs during the day, focused around arts, community work and/or publishing. Also, lots of groups, big and small, use the space for meetings, conferences, gatherings or as a work-space. You are welcome to meet here, just run it past the collective. Think of the place like a library or community centre. Please come on in and make yourself at home, find a way to make it useful for you, bring friends, projects and ideas. It’s a little unusual and will take some time to learn how to be part of the place, but people are friendly and there is really a lot that can happen here. When we say ‘youth’ we mean kids aged 15-25, but we also have a program for younger kids on Sundays and if you are a little older, well, don’t worry about it too much. WHERE ARE WE? We’re on the Eastside between the Drive, Strathcona and Mount Pleasant. More specifically we are at 975 Vernon Drive, upstairs in the big green Mergatroid Building – really close to the corner of Clark and Venables. We’re one block south of Venables and one block west of Clark. We’re pretty easy to find. We’re a short walk from the Drive, Hastings Street and the Skytrain. The #22 bus also stops a block away. WHAT KIND OF STUFF IS HAPPENING? There is always a constant flow of classes and projects happening – much of which is public and open, some of which is individually-organized. Here’s our current schedule of classes and activities, but come on down and find out about other stuff. The Thistle also highly encourages you to bring your own projects and ideas down and use our resources. The contact numbers for each group and class are listed at the bottom. Write them directly if you want to get involved. The place is always open for drop-in: Mon-Wed 4:00 – 10:00 pm and Thur, 1:00-10:00 pm, Friday 3:00-5:00 pm . Everything is free. AERO's Survival Campaign

Dear Friends & Supporters:
For twenty years, AERO has been a major networker and promoter of learner-centered educational alternatives. It has always been a shoestring operation, with almost everything goi...ng toward our mission. But we, too, are now suffering in these bad economic times.

Over the years our deficit has been made up by grants from three foundations and donations from our members. This year we did not receive one of the major grants we were expecting. We have scrambled to find other sources of support but we have fallen quite short. If we can make it a few more months we expect that we will be getting more foundation support and we’ll be okay. In the interim, we need to make up a deficit of about $20,000. When you consider the hundreds of schools around the world that we have helped, or even helped to found, this does not seem like too much. But the reality is that AERO’s support and even our existence is taken too much for granted by many of our members and former members. They think we’ll be here when they need us.

We have not had a major fund raising campaign for several years. We are having one now, and the need is urgent. We need your donations so we can keep our staff working, our bookstore going, continue printing Education Revolution Magazine, continue our online courses, producing our free e-newsletter, updating our website, and so we can organize yet another AERO conference this summer (you’ve probably heard that John Taylor Gatto and Herbert Kohl will be two of the keynoters!)

If you think that AERO has been of some help to you in the past twenty years, or perhaps will be in the future, if you believe in learner-centered and democratic education that really empowers students, if you share our goal of a true Education Revolution, donate to the AERO survival fund so we can be around for a lot longer.

Sincerely,

Jerry Mintz
Executive Director

Even if you can't make a significant donation to AERO now, please forward this message along to any friends, family, and colleagues you may have who believe in learner-centered education.
