Robert Enke, the goalkeeper for Germany and Hannover 96 goalkeeper commited suicide this week by walking in front of a train. It is a reminder that highly successful sports stars out there suffer, just like us 'mortals', with mental illness. Robert had apparently battled with depression since 2003, when he was p...laying for Barcelona. Whether it was the pressure of his position or not is now academic, though he had also lost a young daughter. There is a moving tribute to Robert Enke by Partick Andersson, the Swedish international who played with him at Barcelona and Borussia Monchengladback on the BBC website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/8355214.stm -- Rob Robson Co-founder, iStadia.com Read More

This is from Lewis Howes, the guy we are looking to collaborate over a networking event in January. It's about networking and what we are always trying to ecourage our members to do. Here is the deal.  I am getting a number of emails, phone calls, tweets, etc from people who are having problems in advanci...ng their career or even getting getting a job in sports.  It's tough, I get it.  However, relationships are the most powerful thing you can develop in the sports industry (or any industry for that matter). Let me make this simple.  Most of the time it does NOT matter how smart you are, talented you are, or how much experience you have.  However, it does matter WHO you know, and more importantly WHO knows about what you have to offer.  Think about it.  We stay loyal to those we know, like, and trust... even if someone is better than another person at a certain skill.  It is all about the RELATIONSHIPS!!! You must add value to others.  Period!  Watch my quick video about 4 easy ways to add value to sports professionals to ensure you get a job in sports. What do you think?  Are there other ways you can add value to sports professionals and your network?  Leave a comment below as I would love to see your ideas. Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is part of the cornerstone of most National Governing Bodies' coaching handbooks. Based on Istvan Balyi's research it is a model of training that allows for skill development to take place over several years, working from fun based learning with multi- lateral skill development to ...performance trainin gunder pressure with a high degree of specialisation. However, in practice it appears that most coaches should rename their approach to physical development "Short Term Hypertrophy Training"  (STHT)! or We Must Win This Weekend (WMWTW). This is not a complicated model, let's refer to the title again: Long Term- this means several years, with each progressing from the last. It does not mean a 4 week off season of weights and "beasting" followed by 3 matches a week for 40 weeks of the year. Athlete Development- speed, agility, balance, co ordination, skill, flexibility, power, strength, endurance, mental toughness, confidence are all essential parts of an "athlete". They should all be developed systematically, at the right time in conjunction with growth spurts and on an individual basis.  It is not about how much a young person can bench press or power clean, or how much weight they can put on on 6 weeks. With 50% of young people dropping out of sport at 16 isn't it time we actually made Coaches accountable for their actions? for more information on LTAD and a chance to use EXPERT coaches with EXPERIENCE see here: www.excelsiorgroup.co.uk/child_latd.html Enhancing Sports Performance www.excelsiorgroup.blogspot.com Read More

Last night British boxer David Haye beat 7 foot  Russian Nikolay Valuev to claim the WBA Heavyweight title, in a fight that was marketed as "David versus Goliath". The fight itself was fascinating, Haye's victory the result of a perfectly executed fight plan - though deliberately tweaked to accommodate a broken h...and sustained early in the fight (from the Russian's big hard head! That plan was, in essence, to not get hit and get enough hits in himself to give himself a chance of winning. He used his superior speed and technique - as one might expect of a man giving up around 100lbs (over 40 kilos - apparently the diffence in weight between a flyweight and a heavyweight!) and 8 inches (20cm) in reach to his opponent. Haye exposed Valuev for what he said he is - a lumbering giant that was champion only due to his size. There's nothing wrong with that in itself - you have to use what you have and Valuev has height and weight. But he doesn't have a lot of mobility and last night at least didn't show a great deal of boxing skill. Time after time he threw fresh air punches, while Haye got the occasional punch in on him. Neither did any real damage to the other until the last round when Haye had Valuez really wobbling. What I found really fascinating though was listening to the Sky TV commentators. Their analysis was that Haye was probably not doing enough to win the fight on points. Even though he hit the Russian more times than the Russian hit him, the fact that he spent a lot of time going backwards meant that he might not be rewarded by the judges. So, without being an expert in the rules of boxing, there's not only an objective 'score' in boxing but a level of subjective interpretation too. Hmm. In the end, Haye did get a clear decision, but there seemed the real prospect, right until the scores were announced, that he might not. In sport, however, there always has to be room for one opponent to use their strengths or nullify an opponent's. In football, the lower league team has to try to put the shackles on the superstar attackers and hope for a counter attack. On the track, if one runner follows another for the whole of a 10k and attacks on the last corner no-one can take away their gold medal - right? So why shouldn't Haye have been allowed to execute a game plan - the only game plan - that would work against Valuev? To say that he should rush headlong into a hiding is naive in the extreme. Luckily, Haye wasn't penalised for executing the game plan. Oh - but I said at the beginning that he had to tweak it early on when he broke his right hand. So he had to pick his opportunities more carefully. He had a plan, he adapted it, then he stuck to the revised plan. That's a great lesson for us all that we have to balance the discipline to follow the plan with the flexibility to make the changes required. So you can see why I think that the Haye victory was a victory for Boxing. I don't believe for a moment that Valuev didn't deserve to be champion while he was, but Haye certainly deserved his victory, a victory build on boxing skills, athleticism and tactical discipline. Not just size. -- Rob Robson Co-founder, iStadia.com Read More

My attention was drawn to this video, which was described as a "catfight", on a sport psychology mailing list this morning. It isn't a catfight, but a series of violent acts by a player during a single - televised - match between Brigham Young University and New Mexico. Remarkable, isn't it? The c...omments I've seen this morning ranged from what might be wrong with her, to how her coach could keep her on the field, how the referee (or assistants) didn't pick this up, and even commentary on the media attention it has had. Apparently it has had some attention as a 'humour' piece, raising the fair assertion that it wouldn't have been considered funny if it wasn't a woman. From a psychological perspective, this is interesting because we tend to characterise violence in sport as an uncontrolled act of anger. However John Kerr and others have done quite a bit of research in to violence in sport  using Reversal Theory as a framework, to make the distinction between violence that results from anger versus something else. In this case, the player certainly wasn't uncontrolled. What she was doing wasn't the result of a red mist. She has kind of an angry look about her, but she's not in a rage. So, from a Reversal Theory perspective she's clearly in the rebellious state (because she is unconcerned with staying within the rules!) and possibly serious (but she might actually be having fun - in the playful state), but I would suggest that it is a very strong self-mastery orientation that allows her to act with such violence. In this state, she is concerned with dominating the opposition, exercising control and power over them, and in unconcerned with the impact that she is having upon other people. So - angry - maybe, but maybe not. It's a blindness - a blindness to the harm she might do to others caused by her absolute need to dominate - that I'd suggest is behind this violent behaviour. -- Rob Robson Co-founder, iStadia.com Read More
