iYankees FA Bits: Law, Piliere, Heyman
For those who can’t access Keith Law’s FA rankings, we have the following: Frankie Piliere (FanHouse) offers his top 50 free agents list. Jon Heyman (SI) also outlines the market’s top 50 free agents. Both are free reads. Piliere’s take is pretty comprehensive (like Law’s) while Heyman’s is as detailed. Enjoy.

iYankees Law on Lackey
From Keith Law’s (ESPN) FA rankings, we have the following profile on John Lackey, who the Yankees have been linked to this offseason. Law ranks Lackey third amongst available free agents (only Holliday and Bay are ranked better). Lackey is the only bona fide No. 1 starter on the market this offseason; although others have the capacity to pitch at that level, they’re all either hurt, struggled in 2009 or lack a...

iYankees Wang and the Dodgers
Via MLBTR, we learn that Chien-Ming Wang would be open to the idea of reuniting with Joe Torre and playing for the Dodgers if he and the Yankees don’t reach some sort of agreement later on (assuming he’s non-tendered). There’s no word on whether the Dodgers would be interested in Wang, but one would assume that they would be given their current staff’s uncertainty. Another team to consider if Wang hits free...

iYankees Yanks waiting for Crawford?
From Ken Rosenthal and Paul Morosi (FOX Sports): Two years ago, the Yankees held off trading for left-hander Johan Santana so they could wait for CC Sabathia to hit the free-agent market the following winter. Might they take the same strategy this offseason, bypassing free-agent outfielders Matt Holliday and Jason Bay ...in order to wait one more year for Rays left fielder Carl Crawford? The Yankees might not be thinking that far ahead, but...Read More

iYankees Law pulls no punches with Damon
In Keith Law’s ranking of the top 50 free agents, Johnny Damon was number 22. Here’s Law’s profile on the World Series hero: Damon might be the biggest beneficiary of the fact that the Yankees’ new stadium is a good home run park; his apparent performance boost was largely a product of the new environment, as Damon hit 17 of his career-best 24 home runs at home....

iYankees Matt Holliday VS Jason Bay
In Keith Law’s free agent rankings, he lists Matt Holliday as the number one choice on the open market, with Jason Bay as the runner-up to that title. Here are Law’s profiles on each player (I’ll post more of these throughout the day). On Holliday: Holliday’s stint in St. Louis didn’t end on a good note, and if he leaves for more lucrative pastures his legacy in Missouri may revolve around the missed...

iYankees Morning Bits: Free Agency, Posada, Top 50 FAs
Here are today’s morning items: - Doug Miller (MLB) issues a preview of the now open free agent market. - Pete Caldera cites an inside source who predicts a slow winter for FAs. - Joe P. at RAB ponders Jorge Posada’s offensive production as he ages. - Keith Law (ESPN) offers his Top 50 Free Agent Rankings list (insider...). iYankees Quick Bits: Swisher, Pettitte, Relievers, Bay
Here are some final news items to close out the day: The Yankees are denying Bob Nightengale’s report about Nick Swisher’s availability. Today, Andy Pettitte finally filed for free agency (talk about last minute). Ken Rosenthal reports that the Yankees might be interested in Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano. Jason Bay has rejected a 4-year deal for $60 million from the Red Sox....

iYankees The worst tweet ever
Well, not really, but it’s still pretty awful. Here’s what Bob Nightengale (USA Today) said on Twitter, earlier today: The Yankees, ever so quietly, are letting teams know that RF Nick Swisher is available. While Ben of RAB fame debunks Nightengale’s tweet about as effectively as one could, the remark itself is still somewhat upsetting given the amount of production Swisher provided the Yankees in 2009....

iYankees Quick Bits: Jeter, Collusion, Autographs, Harden, Sheets
Here are three quick items on the day: Derek Jeter is definitely enjoying the offseason (pictured above). Ken Rosenthal writes of the rising tensions between players, agents and owners. Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have signed autograph deals with Upper Deck. Ken Davidoff says that the Yankees haven’t liked Rich H...arden or Ben Sheets in the past, but will bite if the “price is right.” If you haven’t read my piece on Harden, you can...Read More

iYankees Forget Rich Harden
As the recent Ben Sheets chatter would suggest, the idea of investing in low-risk, high-reward starters is an emerging trend this winter. This burgeoning popularity coincides with the free market availability of many talented yet injury-prone arms. From Ben Sheets to Justin Duchscherer, there is currently a plethora of... “young,” low-risk pitchers with tremendous potential, waiting to find a home for the 2010 season....Read More

iYankees Lincecum takes home NL’s Cy Young Award
Tim Lincecum, 25, has been named the National League’s Cy Young Award winner. San Francisco’s The Freak posted a 2.48 ERA (2.34 FIP) over 225 1/3 innings in 2009. He won 15 games, struck out 261 batters and walked 68. He was worth 8.2 WAR, which translates to a theoretical $37 million payday....

iYankees Chapman sweepstakes between NY and Boston
According to Frankie Piliere (FanHouse), the Aroldis Chapman Sweepstakes is an expensive one. Therefore, most mid-market teams will bow out of the proceedings, leaving the Red Sox and Yankees to battle it out for Chapman’s prized left arm. The situation seems pretty simple to me if this is the case, though....

From Jon Heyman (SI): The Braves are expected to take offers on Lowe and/or Vazquez as they expect to pare down from six established starters to five. The Yankees could have some interest in Lowe, “but not at $16 million a year for three years,” one person familiar with their thinking said. iYankees Lackey over Halladay
From Joe P. over at RAB: No one can rule out the Yankees acquiring Roy Halladay. He’s clearly available, and the Yankees have already been connected to him. Given the team’s past behavior, though, I doubt they get too far in negotiations with the Blue Jays. They seem more apt to make a deal for John Lackey, who will just cost money, or to take a chance on a high upside player...

iYankees Pondering Halladay’s leverage
From Jon Heyman (SI): And here’s yet another potential reason the Yankees (or Red Sox) might have an edge this time around: While Halladay’s latest desires are not yet known (and agent Greg Landry did not return calls), with a year to go before free agency a player in Halladay’s position can leverage his no-trade clause to engineer a trade to a team amenable to an extension....

iYankees Trading for Granderson and _______________
Unsurprisingly, an argument can be made that Detroit’s Curtis Granderson, who is currently sitting atop Motown’s trading block, is a good player. Sure, Keith Law (ESPN) recently suggested that Granderson could be headed into a platoon situation due to his inability to hit lefties, however, the fact of the matter is, over the past 4 years, Granderson has never been worth fewer than 3.4 WAR....

iYankees Quick Bits: Joba, Red Sox, All-Star Game, Greinke
You know the drill. Joba Chamberlain really wants Andy Pettitte to return in 2010. Keith Law offers his take on Joba’s 2009 season: “I was fine with the so-called ‘Joba Rules,’” he says, “when they were just a question of managing his workload to protect his shoulder, but at the end of the year, the kid looked like he didn’t know whether he was coming or going when he pitched.” I couldn’t agree...

iYankees Hughes “more of a lock” to start than Joba?
Anthony DiComo (MLB) has a good read out regarding the Yankees’ young right-hander, Joba Chamberlain. In the piece, DiComo discusses Joba’s future in 2010, noting that his role has yet to be defined, although recently, when asked, Brian Cashman hinted that Joba would enter spring training as a starter. Of course, when ...DiComo questioned Joba about Cashman’s slightly hazy intimation, the big Nebraskan responded with, “So he didn’t really answer the...Read More

iYankees CC on Zack Greinke’s Cy Young win
From George King III (NY Post): CC Sabathia required two words to describe being a World Series winner rather than copping a second Cy Young award. “Much happier,” the Yankees’ ace lefty wrote in a text message yesterday after Kansas City’s Zach Greinke was named this year’s AL Cy Young winner. Sabathia, who received 1...3 points but no first-place votes, wasn’t shocked at the outcome. “I wasn’t surprised at all,” Sabathia said of Greinke winning....Read More

At this point, they’re considering it, says Jordan Bastian (via ESPN): Considering Halladay is only under contract through 2010, one way for the Jays to potentially get more in a trade would be to give another team a window in which to discuss a contract extension with the pitcher. Could we see this pairing together again in the near future? Maybe. Sergio Mitre’s option has been declined. He is arbitration eligible, however. Yesterday, Pinstripe Alley picked Frankie Piliere’s brain o...n the young Yankees. He struck out 242 and walked 51. Recently, I wrote about the low-risk, high-upside talent that is Ben Sheets.
