I hate YA.Let me explain.I hate YA for many of the same reasons I hated being a teenager: there are all these external expectations on who you are "supposed" to be, and, simultaneously, you're trying to figure that out on your own.Okay. Try this experiment. Close your eyes.Wait. First, get someon...

It is fascinating to me, all these YA books are being published featuring variations on the same theme: Boy meets Girl, Girl meets boy, Geek meets Geek, Vampire meets girl, Vampire meets Vampire, and on and on...and then nothing happens. As we all know, in the real world, something always happens. Sex happens. So, instead of pretending that sex ... See Moredoesn't exist, wouldn't we be better serving YA readers if we wrote stories where the characters had sex for the right reasons? Like, maybe, oh, I don't know, they cared about each other?

The other thing that bothers me is this association between content, and it serving as some sort of endorsement or encouragement of behaviors that the Thought Police find objectionable. I'm thinking about your gender-blurring characters in Vinyl Princess, for example -- two of my favorite characters from the book. There is nothing "bad" or "evil" ... See Moreabout these kids, they just happen to be different from Wonder-blogger's idea of acceptable, so, therefore, we're being irresponsible and even harmful if we provide such content to young (adult) readers. I don't get it.

I still like to give kids credit for being able to see through the bullshit, though. I honestly think they know the difference between being told a story and being preached to even if it's just a sense of things and I've noticed that they often describe it by saying "That story seemed 'REAL'" or "That character seemed 'REAL'". Ya know?

Well, here it is: my 365th post for the year 2009. I have a lot to say, but I don't feel like saying it today. Instead, I'm simply going to post up the new book trailer for The Marbury Lens. This is a first-cut. There will be changes to this trailer in the weeks ahead. I think it comes off pretty ...

in the path of falling objects First-cut book trailer for next year's horror/fantasy/sci-fi novel, THE MARBURY LENS, published by Feiwel and Friends/Macmillan, to be released fall, 2010. No vampires, wizards, dragons, or magic. Just some really scary, mind-bending stuff. And bugs.
