Trained in the great tradition of classical Hindustani music, one that irrigates the key to the creation of northern India, Shivkumar Sharma and Zakir Hussain have each managed to impose their difference in style, starting with their respective instruments. The first remains the absolute master of the santoor, stringed... instrument of the dulcimer family was long confined to the folklore of the Kashmir Valley, where Sharma was born in 1938. Thus, it comes in the late 60s in the concert world - and by extension in the restricted circle of Pandit - thanks to the album "Call Of The Valley", with the flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia, another iconoclast with which it therefore cease to create.

“There’s just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and Steve Reich is one of them.”
- The Guardian (UK)
The unstoppable quartet So Percussion returns with a program of music by Steve Reich, one of the most startlingly original creative voices of our tim...e—and the winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for music. Reich’s work embraces rigorous structures and propulsive rhythms alongside a harmonic language rooted in non-Western and American vernacular music (tracing to his studies of Balinese Gamelan, African drumming, and jazz). For this event, So Percussion performs works spanning 40 years, including the U.S. premiere of Reich’s most recent composition, Mallet Quartet, commissioned by Lively Arts.
Concert Program:
Clapping Music (1972) – with Steve Reich
Music for Pieces of Wood (1973)
Four Organs (1970)
Nagoya Marimbas (1994)
Mallet Quartet (2009) – U.S. Premiere!
Drumming Part 1 (1970–71)
NOTE: Post-Performance Discussion: Composer Steve Reich and members of So Percussion, Saturday, January 9, Dinkelspiel Auditorium
Steve Reich’s Mallet Quartet was commissioned by Stanford Lively Arts with the generous support of Mrs. Ralph I. Dorfman.

The Switchboard Music Festival is an 8-hour music festival bringing together composers and musicians who are all pushing the boundaries of their respective genres - and, whether they're aware of it or not, are pushing towards each other. No other Bay Area music festival or concert series is dedicated to the idea of bri...nging together such an eclectic, genre-crossing/-breaking/-bastardizing group of experimentalists, innovators, and musical omnivores. This is a concert designed for an audience grown accustomed to the boundary-less world of the internet and the iPod, where all music is equal and must meet only one criterion: It must sound good.

Laurie Anderson is one of America’s most renowned—and daring—creative pioneers. Recognized worldwide as a leader in the use of technology in the arts, Anderson is known widely for her multimedia presentations, casting herself in roles as varied as visual artist, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, electronics whiz, vocalist, and instrumentalist. In her new work, Delusion, which will debut at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and be presented by Stanford Lively Arts on May 5, Anderson explores sound and stories in a series of short plays. Using her inventions in vocal processing, signature violin pieces and lush sonic landscapes Anderson creates and inhabits imaginary worlds that become mental movies. Conceived as a ninety-minute technodrama, the new work combines technology, mystery and contemporary short stories in a unique new art form.

L.A. Theatre Works, the acclaimed radio theater company, performs RFK: A Journey to Justice, a new radio docudrama co-commissioned by Lively Arts, charting Robert F. Kennedy’s personal and political journey at the cusp of the Civil Rights Movement. Kennedy, who was assassinated in June 1968, just months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had a complex and evolving relationship with King and the Movement, gradually moving from mutual suspicion to shared aspirations and strategic alliances. From wiretapping to voting rights, race relations, and wartime politics, the themes underlying RFK’s tenure as Attorney General (in the Johnson administration) and later as US Senator and presidential candidate still resonate more than forty years later. L.A. Theatre Works productions feature a first-rate cast and live sound effects, and are recorded live for radio broadcast, as in the “Golden Age of Radio.”
L.A. Theatre Works:
Founded in 1974, the mission of L.A. Theatre Works (LATW) is to enrich the cultural life of our national community through the use of innovative technologies to produce and preserve significant works of dramatic literature on audio, and to assure the widest public access to these great works.
