This fall, Other Minds salutes one of the early mavericks of American music with two distinct programs of piano and chamber works.
Henry Cowell was born in Menlo Park, CA and also lived in San Francisco, CA for many years (on San ...Marcos Avenue and, later, Castro Street). Late in his life, Cowell said, "I have never deliberately concerned myself with developing a distinctive 'personal' style, but only with the excitement and pleasure of writing music as beautifully, as warmly, and as interestingly as I can."
With two concerts (November 12 and November 13, 2009), a panel discussion, and an exhibition of manuscripts, notes, and artwork, Other Minds will reveal Henry Cowell as both a prolifically experimental composer and passionate advocate of new music. It is no wonder his student John Cage referred to him as "the open sesame for new music in America."

Toradze’s famous interpretation of Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto challenges all other understandings of this enormous work, which he understands as a requiem for the composer’s friend Maksimilian Shmitgoff, who had committed suicide. In Toradze’s own words: “The concerto is Shmitgoff’s life and funeral, the bereave...ment Prokofiev experienced and his desire to turn the clock back.”
Program:
• May Night: Intermezzo from War and Peace (1943, rev. 1952)
• Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, op. 16 (1912–13; revised 1923)
• Romeo and Juliet (1935–36)—a symphonic suite extracted from Prokofiev’s three suites, and the newly available “happy ending” originally conceived by the composer.
