Ophelia

Ophelia I used copper strips around the top lip of my planting boxes as a chemical-free way to keep away snails and slugs, and it appears to work. Have others used this, and will the effectiveness wear off as the copper ages and gains a patina?

sweet! I'm working in the flower bed today, clearing and cleaning. Then hydroponics and planning my garden for cold weather items like spinach and lettuces. Maybe Kohlrabi too.

Diane Herb garden and the fixings for salad...something smaller scale for a subdivision, but I have few decent sized spots that seem to get good sunlight. Lots of morning sun in the backyard, steady sunlight on the side of the house.

Suzy Hello Master gardener and fans! :o)
I wanted to take a quick poll: In your opinion, what are the top ten things to grow in your yard (besides a veggie garden)? I have a small list started...help me out!
1. Berry bushes (blue, black, rasp.)
2. Grape vines
3. herb garden
4. Fruit trees

Harriette Speaking of weeds, anyone have a good orgnic solution for oxalis? I have dug and pulled for 4 years now and still, when it's finally dry enough to start digging, the oxalis rolls and flows all over my back yard. Now that my soil is finally in pretty good shape, the oxalis grows at least a foot and a half high!

Funny reminds me that "a weed is just the wrong plant in the wrong place". I actually planted Oxalis triangularis because I loved its color and dainty flowers. Yes, it's pretty aggressive. Barring pre-emmergent herbicides, cultural practices (hand removal and smothering by sheet mulching) are your only alternatives in my mind.

Haven't really tried the sheet sheet mulching because there are many places in my yard that have permanent plantings and it's hard to mulch around them. Would 3-4" of straw achieve the same results? BTW, I have some pretty pink oxalis in my front yard but it doesn't seem to spread. The backyard is all yellow oxalis.

I posted an article about this last week. Go back and see if you can find it under "lawn removal". I'm sure any material that is thick enough to smother the oxalis will work.

Pauline Grace Is "crab grass" and "bermuda grass" the same thing? Or is crab grass a weed that looks like bermuda?

Yes, my "lawn" is pretty small. We originally put it in with sod as a soft landing around a play apparatus. Now it has become part of my turtle/tortoise yard, so it's not like "manicured" or anything. Nevertheless, I don't want crabgrass taking over. In the front, I have a special no-mow mix. (: Happy New Year!

Home Grown Edible Landscapes Hey Jeanne B. I have roses in my garden (rose hips and petals are edible!). Here's a great link to Farmer Fred's (a CA MG) blog on pruning roses. It includes pictures which is always helpful. I've also got a great PDF on correct pruning from UCDavis. Email me at info@myhgel.com and I'll send it to you. ALSO - There are... great rose pruning workshops coming up all over. Tell me where you're gardening and I'll hook you up!
