Stumbled upon a new recipe the other day: Walnut Red Pepper Dip.
It's a pretty damn good hummus replacement and it's super easy to make as long as you have a nice sized food processor.

2 cups shelled walnuts (soak them for at least 1 hour to soften them; it’ll be easier to process them this way) 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 1/2 tsp. salt 1 jar (12 oz.) roasted red peppers – drained 1 garlic clove, minced 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 tsp. lemon juice

Paleo Dan Quality versus Quantity. For the most part, with the Paleo/Primal way of eating, I don't need to worry about how much I'm eating so long as I'm eating clean, natural foods. I'm just not as hungry as when I was eating the non-foods of SAD (Standard American Diet). However, as I grow as an athlete, I am becoming more and... more concerned about quantity... but not as a typical dieter wondering "am I eating too much?" My concern is with eating enough to support my training load. With that in mind, I made a macronutrient calculator that takes in my body weight, protein requirements, and desired nutrient ratios and spits out my calorie requirement and nutrient breakdown. Take a look, play with the numbers, and then let me know how close it is to your nutritional goals. (PS: It looks fine in Firefox, acceptable in Internet Explorer, not so good in Chrome. Eventually I'll clean it up, but it works.)

Awesome recipe for a paleo/primal athlete's version of protein/energy/power bars... Essentially a bunch of nuts ground up, glued together with dates and coconut oil, and flavored to taste with cocoa, coconut flakes, and coffee. Yes! Yes! Yes!
I'm currently training for triathlons and have been concerned about nutrition ...on longer runs and when I, eventually, get into events longer than sprint length triathlons. This recipe comes from Jonas Colting (http://www.colting.se/), a professional triathlete who follow's Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint. Next week, on Mark's Daily Apple (http://www.marksdailyapple.com/), there will be a post "on how Jonas lives Primal while training as a triathlete." Super excited for that.

Paleo Dan I blogged about yesterday's VIFL14K. This should be my last post about it... unless http://triduo.com got some good pictures of me... if they did, I'm going to post them, but if not, no more about the VIFL14K!

Today, I ran the Virginia is for Lovers 14K. That’s my longest distance ever: 14 kilometers, 8.699 miles, 2.8997 leagues.

Paleo Dan Hey folks, I ran the second annual Virginia is for Lovers 14K today. Going into the race, my goal was 1:30 and I ran it in 1:28:43, so very happy with the outcome. The next race on the schedule is a 5K in about a month. Looking forward to seeing how much faster I am at the 5K distance since I've been training pretty consistently for the past 1.5 - 2 months.

Paleo Dan Forgot about this, but my vitamin D which was about 8 ng/mL last January is now up to 115 ng/mL. I've been supplementing with 10k IU of D3. Going to back that down to 4k IU for a bit and see how things go.

Paleo Dan Just got my blood test results back from the doctor's. About what I expected.

Now some info about my numbers. Yeah, my total and LDL cholesterol numbers are up, but the numbers that matter most to me are down. For example, serum glucose is down almost 6%, my triglycerides are down over 17%, my HDL is up almost 19%, and my VLDL calc is down 20%. But, best of all, my ratio of t...

Paleo Dan These bike jerseys look awesome! I may need to get one or two.

Paleo Dan I just took some body measurements. I've lost 1.5 inches from my chest and waist over the past 6 weeks. Since restarting paleo back in August, I've lost 7.75 inches from my waist and 4 inches from my chest. I'm going to need some new pants very soon. :)

Stacey McClintic Clayton Looking fabulous Dan!!

Paleo Dan Hey folks, I just updated my progress images on my blog... my last update was 12.6 pounds ago. I can't really see a change in belly size, but my love handles are noticably smaller, I think.

Paleo Dan Hey folks, I'm going to be doing the Polar Plunge in a little over a month from now. But, before I can, I need to raise $100 or more! I'm already over half way there, can you help get me over the top?

Paleo Dan I posted a belated race report from the Hair of the Dog 5K on my blog. Not much to say about the race itself, mostly just talked about my performance...

The Hair of the Dog 5k is a New Year’s Day race. To allow for the previous night’s festivities, the start wasn’t until 10 AM. That was mighty nice of the organizers.

Here's a question for the weight-conscious: How often do you see a fat caveman? Exactly. Maybe excepting Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, most portrayals of the people who lived 12,000 years ago depict svelte folks baring rock-hard -- if hairy -- abs. What's their secret? Surely it's great...
