I am annoyed that the focus is on people who are overweight, not those who are only specifically pre-diabetic. I feel that this causes many doctors to miss patients who have pre-diabetes but are not overweight, or who are overweight but do... not have pre-diabetes.

Also, I find it disturbing that weight loss is touted as the main reason for the program instead of getting healthier, eating more low-glycemic index foods and becoming more in control of what helps your body.

Even medical groups that try to cause long term weight loss in individuals are fairly unsuccessful in the long run (as in 5 or more years), and many weight-loss diets are prone to recidivism, and overall long-term weight *gain*.

I believe in healthy lifestyles for ALL people, and consciously promoting good eating habits for all people with different hormonal and chemical profiles is important.

However, I don't think that focusing on fat people and basically shaming them with WEIGHT LOSS OR ELSE is really the way to go.

Shouldn't the most important thing be HEALTH, and not the number on the scale?

      Hi Shauna:

I understand your concerns. This is only one of many diabetes and pre-diabetes management, wellness and prevention programs that PAMF offers. This new class was developed for a specific need group -- it doesn't represent our whol...e diabetes education and wellness program, or the many classes we offer on nutrition without an emphasis on weight loss. Here's a link to our Health Education page so you can see the breadth of nutrition and wellness classes we provide: http://www.pamf.org/healtheducation/

Palo Alto Medical Foundation Your brain loves learning. The more new things it processes and the more connections it tries to make, the better it functions. Engaging your brain may reduce your risk for age-related dementia. Taking a class, solving puzzles or learning a language is like exercise for your mind -- without the sweat.
