Education is the attempt to “lead out” from within the self a core of wisdom that has the power to resist falsehood and live in the light of truth, not by external norms but by reasoned and reflective self-determination.

A Note of Explanation: I am working on a new book, and what follows are some of the “sketches” I’ve been making as I try to discern its shape. Normally, I don’t share notes like this in public. But since my topic this time is democracy, I thought it would consistent with the topic, and good for me, ...

I hope you will use some of Michael Moore's insights about capitalism vs. democracy. IN my view a democracy is partly judged by how it cares for the least advantaged citizens. Also, FDR's 2nd Bill of Rights is instructive.

The previous administration engaged in demagoguery, stirring up people's fears so that they could be manipulated. I'm not seeing that so far with this administration.

Parker J. Parker J. Palmer On democracy (early draft): "Creative tension-holding cannot be left exclusively to our institutions, no matter how well they work—and when they are not working well, structural reform is not enough. It is also vital that we, as leaders and citizens, learn to hold the tension of our differences in our own hearts. When we are unable to do so, our institutions flounder, and we subvert democracy from within."

It is good to read this right now as I've been grappling with the vitriol that has been coming forth at town hall meetings, and as I'm nudging myself towards acceptance of the fact that what I was hoping would happen with heath care reform, probably won't.

I really like this man. Have read his books for a long time. To most people who ask I tell them that I am a Quaker/Baptist as I so admire much about the Quaker faith. Audited div classes at Wake and Max Carter (a quaker) professor at Guilford College is one of my favorite people. We became good buddies as I attended every class he held except this year and I could not go.
