Of all the advice given to Republicans after the Nov. 3 elections, one quote stands out. It's from Ed Gillespie, the former head of the Republican National Committee who chaired Bob McDonnell's landslide gubernatorial win in Virginia this year.

I have an idea. Since the state needs to save money, why don't we start laying off our representatives in the Legislature ("State to Lay Off 319 Workers," Nov. 17)? It seems many of them have too much time on their hands anyway. ...

I enjoyed this article.

However some of the things you mention do not necessarily make insurance less expensive. Rates are different by state because costs and legislation are different in each state. Unless you address those issues first, allowing people to buy insurance may not only be NOT less expensive, but may put them in a bad position with... See More coverage shortages or other problems.

When it comes to legislation, certain states have legislated in benefits that may applicable to their residents. So if you buy insurance in a different state you may lose that benefit also.

Also one of the great myths of health insurance is that if you have a larger group your rates are automatically cheaper. That is not necessarily true either. The costs can be better anticipated or less volatile when you spread the risks but that doesnt mean the premiums are lower. In fact larger companies often pay less because they self insure. ... See MoreWhen you self insure, many of the rules of insurance do not apply, and this is where money can be saved, especially when an employer's self insured plan chooses to ignore the very legislation that drives up the cost.

And if you live in PA and buy insurance with 100% coverage from an insurance company based in, say, Oklahoma. your 100% coverage at THEIR costs may only give you 60% coverage at Philadelphia area costs, so the insurance may indeed be CHEAPER, but also have that hidden shortage. People will buy it, get hospitalized, get hit with a huge balance bill, and then complain that YOU didn't protect them from this happening.

Sorry to keep rambling.

Julie, I'm planning to move to OK. There they spend 19 million to create 15 jobs.

Heck if they give me the 19 million after a reasonable profit and over head I can easily create 10 times that many jobs. You know 9 million in my pocket, 1 million in kick backs (oops I meant political donations), 50K * 150 jobs and still money left to pay benefits. :)

Arkady, you are wrong. In the late 1980s Congress passed an insane 'catastrophic insurance' bill which proved to be so unpopular among seniors that it was repealed a year later.

Not that this abomination is going to pass, but if it did, I am certain that Mr. Toomey would be among those orchestrating its repeal.

He was awesome as a Rep, and he'll be awesome as a US Senator.
