WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO JOHN

TRANSFORMING MICHIGAN'S ECONOMY

John Cherry is committed to transforming Michigan into a 21st century, high-tech knowledge economy. John recognizes that Michigan’s economic sustainability in the 21st century will require better access to higher education for every citizen; green-collar jobs in renewable energy, advanced automotive manufacturing, water management and high-tech research industries; and a natural environment that attracts entrepreneurs and skilled workers.

John Cherry also knows that the day-to-day lives of working people and families are being profoundly affected by Michigan's economic transformation. That's why he has worked steadily to help make sure that state government is focused on protecting and helping people.

EDUCATION: MAKING MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE IN THE 21st CENTURY

John led the Cherry Commission on Higher Education and Economic Development, and he believes in common sense improvements to education in Michigan. Expanded access for Michigan's youngest learners, rigorous standards and high expectations in primary and secondary schools, helping families afford the cost of college, and making sure that post-secondary schools are meeting the needs of the marketplace -- all of these approaches will help the people of Michigan thrive in the global, 21st century economy.

PROTECTING MICHIGAN'S ENVIRONMENT

People from all over the world are attracted to our woods and water, our vineyards and farmlands, because Michigan's natural resources create an un-paralleled sense of place that is vital to our economic transformation. As a sportsman and conservationist, John Cherry knows we must protect those assets if the quality of life we value is to continue. John led an effort to solicit input from thousands of Michigan citizens at more than 20 public meetings to create the MI Great Lakes Plan -- a blueprint for the restoration and protection of the Great Lakes and Michigan waterways. And only days after John presented the MI Great Lakes Plan to the Obama administration, the President proposed an unprecedented investment in Great Lakes protection and restoration - following the exact strategies recommended in the Plan.
