Chris DiBona, open source program manager at Google, recently likened Twitter to a cocktail party. He commented that it is like all of these conversations going on around you - you notice a #topic and gravitate toward that conversation or you hear @YourName mentioned and move to that conversation or you just sit back and listen to everything going on. I think this is the best analogy I have heard.
