Modern traffic pays little heed to the White River in eastern Arkansas. But there was a time when the White River was both a barrier to be overcomeand a highway to the world beyond Arkansas.

We vacationed in Calico Rock a few months back. The current owners of the old hotel filled us in on the history of the railroad takeover (and a ton of other things). Once the rail came in, the steamboats vanished in less than two years... practical, but kind of sad.

I love the history of the steamboats,I have some information on the Sultana that caught fire and sunk in the Mississippi, but when the river changed I heard it was now buried in a field around West Helena.Would love to know more about this subject.

The white river needs to have a nostalgic Riverboat Restaurant like the Arkansas Queen on the AR river. The closest thing we have is Dondies' - looks like a boat sittin on the bank at Des Arc.
