the 3d marios are actually the best,3d sonic the hedgehog, also the best,3d street fighter, ex 2 was super, street fighter 4, even more super, and the producers said they wanted to maintain the 2d feel thats why streetfighter to an extent is 2d.so the thing is that 2d is still important.so i'll have to agree with the shigeru guy on that one

2D shouldnt be looked at as something of the past...there can still be good 2D games.
3D should be 3D and 2D should be 2D
it shouldnt be referred to as 'moving forward''

hey guys...stop thrashing the house that jack built.
granted, 2d maybe outdated...but there's still stuff that's much better in 2d, and hasn't really translated into 3d.

technically there's still lots of games that are 2d [or 2.5d] masquerading as 3d games...e.g, we still dont have a pure 3d fighter (tekken being the closest - with its 2d gameplay/3d graphics & mechanics hybrid) - not to mention sames that still make use of parallax scrolling and rendering thrown into all the fancy 3d(ish) graphics...
(hey, coz it looks 3d don't make it 3d)... See More

in some ways i agree with miyamoto-dono, but then again people call me a relic from the past (what with my love for side scrolling & top scrolling shooters and all..)

It depends on overall style of game itself! Some games were popular due 2 de style of graphics....Remember Contra,Mega man,Battle toads,Street Fighter series,Top Gear,Mario Bros.....Etc those games rocked and still rock bcos of its 2D origins. Most nu school games are 3D and are widely accepted by de nu generation and some of de old school games ... See Moremake a change 2 3D but not all of dem are successful. Personally,i love 2D games, its colorful and fun 2 play. 3D games are about realism and dat can be cool in most cases and yet uninteresting in some way. They both ave their strengths and weakness. Ever heard of toon shading....Its a combination of both styles.SF4 is using it!

i'll say this much, some games are meant to be in 3d (majority of games from playstation era), and some 2d games make some good transitions from 2d to 3d. others are better left in their 2d element. but please remember its not about the best graphics that the game can put out, its whether the game is fun. 2d gaming had instant pick and play down ... See Moresolid. the really great games could be played and enjoyed for brief moments, but could still eat into your time and keep you captivated by with the challenge of fully mastering them. a lot of 3d games now however don't have that charm and appeal. if its not eating 10+ hrs of your life its not a good game? what's with that? and when you have done everything that needs to be done, how many people really, really go back to play those games? not that many, unless it has some kind of multiplayer.

3d games are great, but the majority of them don't have that same lasting appeal that 2d games did. i mean sure the big names like capcom, konami, squaresoft and a host of others dominated with loads of their games from 2d to 3d. but in the 2d age their were lots of other not so stellar developers who made tons of excellent games that stand out in our memories and also are still memorable, challenging and a hell lot of fun. new school gamers might not see the appeal here since they have been playin flashy stuff for most of their gaming lives, but i have to say their is a lot to be said for the old school. by far it still has some of the most frantic, challenging, and difficult games you will find out there, and that is the kind of thing that i am looking for. if its not your cup of tea, that's ok, but don't go knocking it becos you can't get it. that's just not cool.

for all you people still talking about 2d vs 3d today, you might want to check this article out. might give you some things to think about in todays gaming mentality. and anyone who thinks this isn't worth thinking about, obviously doesn't appreciate the history of the industry as it is today.
