For the record, I do not understand why a dog would be tattooed and I hope that the family that lost him is not responsible for branding him.

For the record, many European countries required ear tattoos on all registered dogs, for identification. Now that chips are available they have switched to those.

Dawn the numbers tattoed on the dog are kinda like a licens plate. You should be able to find the owner from those #s...

Well, that makes me feel so much better! I just could not understand why a dog would have to have one! The dog had a chip, but it was not registered...Does anyone know where you could look up those numbers in a directory?

I think the dog came from Europe. I have two that I adopted in France and they both have tattoos as well as chips. Their chips can not be read by the US chip readers (or whatever you call them).

when I adopted my dog from the humane society in Fort Lauderdale - he was given a tattoo. the dog is not necessarily from Europe - a lot of humane societies tattoo.

How do you get the chip read then? I am not sure what message the vet received when they tried to read the chip.

SMYRNA, GA FANS - POST THIS MESSAGE ON YOUR PROFILE...THIS DOG SHOULD BE EASY TO IDENTIFY!!!!

If there's a chip (like Home Again) and the owners of the dog actually registered it on the website, when the vet reads the chip, all the information should come up automatically (I guess he needs to key in the number of the chip???)

His chip came back as unregistered, but someone yesterday said that chips from out of the USA are unreadable here in the States. That was also before I realized how common it was for dogs to have tattoos, so he might not even be from another country. He is being watched by the Cumberland Animal Clinic now, but there is a family that will be taking care of him after tomorrow, so he will be in good hands regardless.
