Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Hi all, the zoo is open today, and breakfast and lunch with Santa sessions are proceeding as scheduled.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Puppy cuteness! Our African painted puppies are nearly two months old, and definitely showing their wild side. In Africa, they can take down much bigger prey through teamwork. Here, they employ the same strategy against our vet tech's pants and my shoes.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium So the zoo got sea turtles a little ahead of schedule. We weren't expecting any until next year, but these two guys (or girls?) from North Carolina needed a home after being discovered lost on the beach. Here are they being weighed by aquarist Josie Romasco. Note that the yearling's weight is in pounds, the hatchling in grams.

The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium wasn't expecting sea turtles until next year, after special exhibit was built, but when two turtles from South Carolina were discovered abandoned on the beach last and needed a home, the aquarium took them in. ...

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Here's a video of of our black rhinos on their first date last week. There was snorting, stomping, shoving, and headbutting (all expected when dealing with rhinos), but no love. After an hour of that business, our female, Azizi (the lighter-colored rhino), decided she'd had enough, and backed herself into a corner, lea...ving the male, Jomo (the smaller of the two), to stand and stare at her for another hour. Zookeepers finally lured him away with hay and fruits. Here's hoping for a more productive second date and, eventually, a baby rhino.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium I have the zoo's 2010 calendar on my desk, and it looks great! Here's our baby sea lion, who is this year's cover girl. Calendars should be on their way to members' homes very soon. If you're not a member, check out our information page. If you bring kids to the zoo more than once a year, it pays for itself: www.pittsburghzoo.org/Membership

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium We broke our all-time attendance record this weekend. As of now, our new record is 1,026,705 people, with a few weeks still to go in the year! Thanks so much to all of our visitors!

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium UPDATE: The zoo is closed for the day due to weather.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Here's a short video of our baby springbok out in the yard last week. She's less than a month old but already zipping around the exhibit.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Most people have seen these "Save Wild Animals" license plates on cars throughout Pennsylvania, but some weren't aware that $15 from each purchase goes to the Pittsburgh Zoo, the National Aviary, and three other Zoos in the state. (You also might not have noticed that there is a tiny tiger cub on the plate with its mom).

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium For the folks wondering about Honey - she's being adopted today by one of our Zoo U. volunteer students. The girl taking her in has done extensive work with our African painted dogs, and will give Honey a great home. Honey and her new family are at the Humane Society right now filling out the paperwork. Check WTAE's 6 ...p.m. broadcast for a story with Sally Wiggin.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Just a reminder that the zoo is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. We're here on Black Friday, though, and our Noon Year's Eve celebration is on Dec. 31.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Our orphaned African painted dog puppies are now one month old. Of the nine we had, five have survived and seem to be thriving (Normally half of a litter dies, even with a mom. Without, the pups faced long odds). Credit goes to Honey, their surrogate mom, and the Zoo's vet staff, which has been working around the clock with the pups.
