The Philharmonic Winds
Before the wind orchestra heads off to Japan to participate in the 40th anniversary of the prestigious Japan Band Clinic, The Philharmonic Winds will present a concert with a programme as rich as Japan's culture and history.
Led by American maestro John Boyd, the 60-piece wind orchestra will give the Asian premiere of e...stablished American composer David Maslanka's Give Us This Day (Short Symphony for Wind Ensemble). While the title is a quote from the Christian "Lord's Prayer", the music is in fact inspired by a Vietnamese Buddhist monk's book, For A Future To Be Possible.
The work begins with a deeply searching first movement and moves into a highly energised second movement. At times both joyful and sternly sober, it ends with a modal setting of baroque master J.S. Bach's chorale Vater Unser in Himmelreich (Our Father In Heaven).
Taiwanese trumpeter Yeh Shu-Han, who has won numerous awards as an instrumentalist, joins The Philharmonic Winds to perform theConcerto For Trumpet by Alfred Reed. Reed, seen as one of the most influential composers in the history of wind music, composed the concerto specially for the talented Yeh. Here's a rare opportunity to hear the piece performed by the very musician the piece was written for!
The Philharmonic Winds will also present another Asian premiere. Cathedrals, a new award-winning piece by 21-year-old composer Kathryn Salfelder, is a fantasy on Gabrieli's Canzon Primi Toni from the Sacrae Symphoniae, and won the prestigious Frederick Fennell Prize last year. Like the 1597 Gabrieli masterpiece, Cathedrals features a double brass choir, augmented with the rich colour palette, modal harmonies and textures of woodwinds and percussion.
