Ariel University Students Not Invited to Obama Speech...
Yedioth Ahronoth (p. 16) by Zvika Brott -- President Obama’s visit hasn’t yet begun, but it has already managed to get some MKs angry. This is because the US Embassy invited representatives of university students from all over Israel to hear his speech at the International Convention Center, except for students from the Ariel University Center.
Jewish Home figures said last night that this was discrimination and demanded clarifications about their exclusion from the embassy. MK Yoni Chetboun from the Jewish Home met yesterday with the chairman of the Ariel University Center’s student union and heard from him that the students were angry.
I can’t understand this decision, MK Chetboun wrote to US Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro. He noted that the Ariel University Center had been recognized by the Israeli government and that by boycotting its students, the US administration was taking a one-sided stand.
Student representatives were also angry. “ We were shocked by the discrimination and the way a university in Israel was left out,” said the chairperson of the student union, Shai Shahaf. If the decision is not changed, the students still plan to attend—in order to demonstrate.
