Detroit's Chene Street was once a thriving retail district, packed full with small businesses. The heavily Polish neighborhood around it declined in the 1980s, largely due to the General Motors Poletown Plant fiasco in 1981, which essentially cleared out a large portion of the neighborhood by eminent domain. Over 362 acres were cleared for the plant, displacing 4200 residents, many of whom fought until the end to keep their homes and place of worship.
