    • Jeff Haab the only misconception is that there are 60 seats on the bus, 60 seats on the bikes and 60 cars with 4-5 seats per car... There should be 12-15 cars taking up space to accurately depict the transport of 60 people. Bikes win cuz you go where you want to

    • Stuart Lewis Yes Jeff, but the fact is. the majority of cars you see on the road only have one person in them.. the driver.
This picture is to make you realise that you are not stuck in traffic, you ARE traffic.
There is no need for a car in a modern city.

    • Sharaf Boldt Obviously these transportation options are not interchangeable and have differences (pros/cons) in terms of travel time, cost of travel, pollution, economics, accessibility, etc. Cars aren't inefficient, as this picture suggests. My beef is with the differences in PICTURE PERSPECTIVE/ANGLE. You'll notice the left is zoomed in. The two on right are birds eye, you can see the street's end. Poster is misleading.

I hate this stupid picture.. All it's saying is it takes less space, not to mention it implies that every car can only hold 1 person. People aren't going to bike to work when they live thirty miles away, nor are they going to take a bus whi...ch instead of going from point A to point B only has to go from A to B to C all the way through the alphabet more than twice thus making it much less practical than this pointless picture would imply. This picture doesn't wake people up, it simply shows them what, in theory, would be best for the environment but worst for the practicality of our everyday lives. It only shows that hippies find the worlds problems to be much simpler than they actually are.See More

I get pretty annoyed, reading comments from all the self-righteous people who don't drive.

What about the old, the handicapped, children families, people living far from everything, people transporting much when they travel? And those who ...just enjoy themselves in their car, instead of having a big house or spending much (both money and pollution-wise) on going on vacation.

I build and sell electric cars, and bike whenever it is possible, yet as part of my work I drive thousands of kilometers in a diesel car each week, because the electric cars do not yet have the range to go there in time - that's just a matter of technology, and we are getting there, but without using regular cars in the mean time, we will never have the electric cars.

And when electric (and give us a decade; autonomeous, and sustainably produced) cars are in place with the necessary infrastructure, everybody can enjoy the freedom of personal transportation without todays trouble - making such an individual (and goods) transport service with railroads is far more demanding (and in many scenarios less sustainable!), with small busses coming close to the time factor but lacking much in comfort and the feel for personal freedom.

So don't write off the car, just because it causes problems today, both regarding pollution, congestion and accidents, etc. - it is a great tool today and tomorrow it may be a greater blessing than you imagine.

Just don't use it, when you don't need it, and use it wisely when you do: Despite being the owner of several companies my car is a Peugeot Partner; big and flexible enough for almost every private or business task (so I need only one car), comfortable for long journeys and as sustainable in production and use as they come today. It is not very ‘bling’ – something often noted by me business partners – but they are dealing with me anyway, and those who find a partner’s car’s appearence to be even close to important I couldn’t care less for anyway ;-) And if you truly need to impress someone or move something big, for whatever reason, you can rent a car. So there are few good excuses for a bad choice of car!

    • Ed Keturakis Theeradete, I live in downtown Washington, DC and when you take time into the equation, as you did, the bike still wins. To get to work, door to door: in my car = 50 min.; on my bike = 45min.; on the metro 40-45min. The equation changes when there are so many cars on the roads. I love breezing past all the cars parked in a traiffic jam, while on my bike.

I find the comments stating that '5 people per car is also a great idea' a laughable idea. what they don't take into account is the fact that most people drive to work alone and are not willing to take 4 strangers along with them.
Finding ...better means of transportation in highly dense populated areas is a great idea that should be taken into account. As many have stated taking anything other then a car is out of the question for many reasons. Sometimes it's more feasible and time efficient. What I take from this picture as an engineer in the making is that we should be working on finding better and green means for transportation. Today we may not be affected but in a lifetime a lot can change and this is evident when we look upon the lives of those who have lived in the past hundred years. See More

Carpooling must be really popular in many y'alls cities. Unfortunately the cities I've lived in have rarely had more than one person inside each car. Granted that means that a 60 person bus could on average hold 30 people, but adding anot...her bus would sure be preferable to the car jam on the left and the car jam most of LA sits in from 2:30pm to 7pm daily (ie 20min trip takes 1.25hrs not an exaggeration either). Also if people bicycled more there would be fewer obese people with less asthma caused by pollution (ie people would have a better health) although no one in America is really obese anyway so who cares, traffic and pollution aren't problems either so who cares. I wouldn't want people to sacrifice things for the betterment of society, that's what Christ did, why should we follow his example? If you didn't get the end, I was being sarcastic.See More

How about this. By the end of the year in the U.S. gas will be up at 7$ an hour. Sooo, go buy a bicycle, or get a bus pass. =] Easy as that. Then you'll unwillingly have to help the planet. Just a smidgen. Plus it'll get us all in shape. OH..., AND BTW. The world will NOT end this year. Look up the mayans winter solice for all those who just don't care cause the world is ending anyways. =] Cause sorry buddy, you gotta live past it anyways. Haha.See More
