George Schaefer's slogan when he took over at RKO in late 1938 and signed Orson Welles was "Quality pictures at a premium price." When Schaefer was replaced in June of 1942 by Charles Koerner, the studio's new motto became "Showmanship in place of genius," a direct reference to the young genius Welles, whose contract Koerner quickly terminated.
