Sudden Unintended Acceleration in Runaway Cars: Is Electro-Magnetic Interference Causing It?

Could sudden unintended acceleration in cars be caused by electro-magnetic interference and other computer glitches given the sophisticated drive-by-wire systems in modern cars? At the US Congress hearings, the American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has admitted that it is investigating electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and other computer glitches as a cause of serious malfunction in cars. Toyota's top American executive, James Lentz, told the US Congress inquiry that the company's recent safety recalls may not totally solve sudden unintended acceleration in its cars, as the transportation secretary said he would expand a federal probe to other auto makers.

How can cars, computers and cell phones inexplicably malfunction? EMI induced malfunction of electronics equipment is a common occurrence. We have all noted that:

. If a cell phone is put next to a computer, a loud static can often be heard on the computer's speakers;
. The car's CD player can produce a loud static whenever a call is made or received via the cell phone;
. When a number is dialled on a cordless phone, one can hear the number being dialled through a baby monitor;
. When a truck goes by, its CB -- Citizen's Band -- radio system can overwhelm the FM radio station tuned in the car; and
. Most of us have come across motors that cause radio or TV static.

None of these electro-magnetic interferences (EMIs), technically, should be happening. A truck's CB radio is not transmitting on the FM radio bands, so a car radio should never hear the truck's radio signals. However, all transmitters have some tendency to transmit at lower power on harmonic side bands, and this is how the car radio picks up the truck's radio. The same principle holds true for the wireless phone crossing over to the baby monitor. In the case of the cell phone affecting the computer's speakers, the wire to each speaker is acting like an antenna, and it picks up side bands in the audible range. These are not dire problems. But notice how common they are. In an aeroplane, hospital or in a highly sophisticated modern car, with hundreds of microprocessors and microchips, the same phenomena can be responsible for malfunction and safety hazards. Electromagnetism suggests that electronic signals — from sources as diverse as cellphones, airport radar and even a car's own systems — briefly and unpredictably wreak havoc with sensitive electronic controls in vehicles. In a 2008 report after testing a 2007 Lexus ES-350, manufactured by Toyota, NHTSA stated, “Magnetic fields were introduced in proximity to the throttle body and accelerator pedal potentiometers and did result in an increase in engine revolutions per minute (RPM) of up to approximately 1,000 RPM, similar to a cold-idle engine RPM level.”

Onboard EMI sources

Automakers' move to electronic engine controls, including throttles, has been driven by the need to meet tighter US federal fuel and emissions regulations. They allow far more precise control of the engine operation and fuel use. Recent years have seen drive-by-wire systems replacing mechanical control of other critical functions, such as steering assist. While EMI from external sources, such as traffic lights or radar, is possible, it is unlikely because it would require an unusually strong signal. More likely sources of EMI are onboard components, because even very low-power electromagnetic radiation from the car's electronics can cause a problem. For example, EMI from poorly designed ignition wiring disrupts signals in the electronic throttle or engine controls. Internal EMI has been linked to high-voltage spikes when current in a wire or coil is switched, such as when the headlights or brake lights go off.

Automakers EMI Concerns

At least 14 Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA) lawsuits specifically alleging EMI are pending, including the ones against Toyota. Testing for potential EMI is a closely guarded subject within automakers. They contend that vehicle systems are designed with sufficient shielding and redundancy to prevent malfunctions of electronics and computerised equipment including accelerators. However, lawsuits over the years have uncovered documents citing internal concern. Auto experts interviewed by NHTSA defect investigators say automakers almost never publicly acknowledge EMI problems. Why would automakers spend millions of dollars on sophisticated EMC (Electro-Magnetic compatibility) test facilities, and place EMC test requirements on all their electronics suppliers, if it wasn't necessary?

GM: Walter Gelon, then an employee at General Motors-owned Hughes Aircraft, warned in early 1987 that he thought EMI was behind reported sudden unintended acceleration in GM vehicles, according to an internal memo. "It seems very clear to me that (GM) vehicles have serious EMI problems which are triggering ... unwanted acceleration," Gelon wrote to Hughes colleagues.

Ford: In the 1980s, as use of electronics in cars expanded fast, EMI was on the minds of Ford engineers as well. The minutes of an October 1986 Ford Technical Affairs Committee meeting, show Ford looked into whether "electromagnetic influences" were behind an increase in unexplainable electronic component failures.

Toyota: Engineers say floor mat interference and sticky gas pedals are the cause of sudden unintended acceleration in more than 8.5 million vehicles Toyota has recalled. It commissioned an outside company, Exponent, in December to look at the electronic throttle controls, which have replaced mechanical gas pedal and throttle systems in most vehicles of all makes since the 1990s. According to a draft report, Exponent says it could not induce sudden unintended acceleration through "electrical disturbances." But EMI experts argue that tests weren't comprehensive enough to find whether EMI could be to blame; and two experts consulted by the House Energy & Commerce Committee of the US Congress were similarly critical. To help protect against surges in acceleration, Toyota is also installing a brake override system on new cars and updating some models dating back to 2007. Several automakers, including Chrysler and Nissan, already offer a form of smart-brake technology that enables drivers to cancel sudden acceleration by pressing on the brake.

Carwash and SUA

Some evidence suggests that carwashes may be a susceptible environment for Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA) incidents because of moisture and electronic signals from equipment. Independent safety experts note that a disproportionate number of sudden unintended acceleration events occur in or around car washes. The data suggests the car wash causes electromagnetic interference with the vehicle electronics, which either initiates or replicates errant signals to the electronic throttle controls. This interference is likely caused by moisture penetrating the electronics and acting as a conductor for electromagnetic interference from the car wash machinery. Carwash operators for years have complained about SUA incidents involving several auto brands and models.

Conclusion

Although the root cause for Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA) remains unknown, including incidents involving recalled Toyotas, some engineers believe electromagnetic interference from cell phones, satellite radio and even microwaves may be contributing to the problem. Electromagnetic interference may disrupt the electronic signals to the throttle system, which controls the acceleration. The basic problem is that electronic malfunctions do not necessarily leave a trail of evidence. It is a classic case of dead men tell no tales. There is no imprint due to electronic failure. As an example of electronic interference, a voltage spike can generate electromagnetic flux and interfere with the signal sent to the accelerator pedal. In one incident, a cell phone signal has caused a German-made bus to shift into gear. Several sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) lawsuits filed against Toyota claim some type of EMI link. However, if the US Congressional hearings probe deeply enough, they may discover that the global car industry has known for a long time that one of the plausible causes of SUA is internal electro-magnetic interference (EMI).

Members of the US Congress blasted Toyota this week for what they said was its resistance to the idea that electromagnetic interference can cause car systems to go haywire. Bart Stupak, a Democrat from Michigan, said Toyota “misled the American public by saying that they and other independent sources had thoroughly analysed the electronics systems and eliminated electronics as a possible cause of sudden unintended acceleration when, in fact, the only such review was a flawed study conducted by a company retained by Toyota's lawyers.”

This week's hearings in Washington, DC, have shown that many Congressmen are deeply sceptical about traditional mechanical explanations for sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) in vehicles. Given the detailed evidence presented by the victims, the sombre mood of the public and wall-to-wall coverage of this critical issue, there is likely to be extra pressure on automakers to renew their efforts in identifying the real cause of the SUA. Especially if the proposed fixes do not solve the identified problems in recalled cars. In essence, this means that US lawmakers will seek to ensure that going forwards, electromagnetic interference and computer glitches cannot and should not be ignored by the global car industry.

@Rick: That was an '05 report, correct? I think we're going to have to be subject to higher numbers of miscarriage and birth defects before there you will see either outcry or statistics.. even more curious are reports tha...t the output from the scanners could potentially 'unzip' DNA, causing balloons/bubbles/rips in a person's DNA.

But without hijacking D.K.'s thread, longterm solar 'weather' forecasts have been problematic... we know/recall too little. Also, during periods of extremely low solar activity, the Earth recieves greater radiation/electromagnetic influence from galactic center... does that increase the closer the planet approaches 2012? Can we theoretically be under high electro-mag influence from galactic center AND our Sun? Could this too explain the solar anomalies we are seeing with the Sun, as a living force, trying to counter electro-mag influences external to the solar system? (RE: ala email/link I'd sent you and Sharon some time ago showing the Sun sending out large bursts following the orbit of a huge asteroid) Food for thought.....

Two of the possible causes could be linked to the economic system failure and corruption resulting in cost cutting attempts that resulted in inferior components, assembly or design. Perhaps a worker or programmer overstressed now doing the ...job of two people makes a mistake.
Can you imagine that someone gets away with gaming the system doing quite well financially but then their Airplane crashes due to lack of maintenance ? It's all connected there is no cheating the system in the long run. Karma?
The other two or three possible causes are even more interesting in that they are beyond our control to a degree and could affect many objects and systems we depend on and may have been totally unanticipated.

I have programmed embedded systems, for certain types of vehicles and it is the most difficult thing to program, brain racking and sometimes mysterious. Testing this stuff is and would be super tedious. One would need to hook up an expensiv...e oscilloscope and record the "wave" activity on the wire break it down into individual bits and look for error. When programming this stuff one must take into account various anomalies and reset things if they produce odd data or it gets out of sync. A car has a data bus, a network that it communicates over and it is sensitive to EMI and various fluctuations. Strange unexpected things can happen when dealing with magnetic fields and electricity, a microprocessor is it's self a generator of electromagnetic field disturbance. As I mentioned before a faulty ground for example anywhere in the system can cause random strangeness. See More

EMI might indeed play a big role into this, with the EMI coming from other sources than man made:

Physically, our solar system is moving through the shortest part of an orbit that looks like a flattened circle, and ellipsis whose far end ...carries us to the most distant point from the core of our home galaxy, the Milky Way.

Physical effect: Both ancient traditions and modern science tell us that our location in this cyclic orbit determines how we experience the powerful sources of energy, such as the ‘massive magnetic fields’, which radiates from our galaxy’s core. Additionally, modern discoveries confirm that Earth’s position (orbit, tilt, and wobble) throughout the journey creates the ever-changing cycles that influence everything from temperature and climate to polar ice and the planet’s magnetic fields.

The emotional/spiritual effect: as we travel farther from our galaxy’s core, our distance from the energy located there was described by ancient traditions as the loss of a connection that we sense both spiritually and emotionally. Scientific links between the quality of Earth’s magnetic fields, how they are affected by cosmic conditions, and our feeling of well-being seem to precisely support such ancient beliefs.

Our ancestors had an amazingly deep grasp of just what our experience of cosmic cycles means on multiple levels. Somehow they knew that Earth’s position in the heavens would affect the physical conditions in our world, as well as the emotional and spiritual experiences that we need to embrace them. They reminded us that the farther we travel away from the source of such powerful energy, the deeper we are in darkness and the more out of sync we find ourselves with the fields that influence life here on Earth.

If(1) the lessening of Earth’s magnetic shield allows more of the sun’s energy to create greater change, (2) the way we respond to that change is the catalyst for our spiritual growth, and (3) both are occurring at precisely the same time that a rare 5,000-year cycle combines with an even rarer alignment happening just once every 26,000 years, then it’s as if the cosmos has somehow conspired to shower us with the influence of what Jose Arguelles calls the ‘galactic synchronization beam.’

I believe the long-term risks of electromagnetic radiation, EMR will become a major public health issue in the decades to come. We are so all so in love with the miracle of electricity that we have been overly complacent about the possibil...ity of it having any negative effects and have not really studied EMR's long-term effects on such sensitive complex bioelectrical system such as the human being. It turns out that the human body is a lot like it was been imagined for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. It is its own bioelectrical field within the larger world of gravitational and electrical fields. and health can be affected by altering these forces. It is my understanding that the body manufactures its own little electromagnetic fields as part of tissue repair and cell reproduction.

And I think that really strong cell phone towers can make you feel extremely bad. I steer clear of them because they make my skin crawl. Also there is a lot of evidence that beamed microwave energy is being developed for military applications by many countries because basically we are bioelectrical mechanical devices that coexist in a world of complex subtle electro-gravitational fields and the goal is to make the enemy either too ill or confused to fight effectively. the EU has passed a law against using electronic transmissions for harassment. So there might be something to that? New technologies come out of every war, and I believe the war in Iraq has produced some new ones? Sophisticated computer software that uses biometric identification of individuals by their voice prints at extreme distances has been perfected as a targeting technology to use electronics to make people ill. also new methods of sound generation and control have weapon I asked audible frequencies to disable targets. So I see a possible downside to this universal explosion in electronic communications, as well as in the EMR that is given off by all of our traditional electronic technologies and electrical transmission grids. We have created a world of invisible forces unlike anything that has ever existed in nature, and we're so enamored with our conveniences we have been woefully in different to the possibility of deleterious effects due to long-term exposure to EMR? I little less concerned that the gas pedal will stick in my dad's Lexus than getting a brain tumor from a cell phone?

I am one of those people who unintentionally destroys electronics around me, from time to time..and I'm sort of a techie so imagine my frustration! I cannot wear wrist-watches..they stop working. Umpteen phones and computer have crashed on ...me. At times, lighting goes on and off as I enter or leave a room. Televisions experience interference when I'm close. I feel energy on a global scale. My son is the same. When both of our energies are heightened, objects in our home have moved. We have no interest in causing any of this and just sort of shake our heads saying, oh no not again.
My point is..that human energy fields affect the electronics around us. Energy comes in many shapes and forms and interference does as well.
I wonder whether this may figure into SUA in some manner?

I am very sympathetic to those of you with EMR sensitivity. It runs in the family. We can be thousands of miles of apart and have simultaneous identical symptoms and contact each other to confirm them. we don't bother trying to explain it ...to friends. It's too weird. But on days when we're feeling charged or "hot", as it were, everything we touch sure gives us a huge static electricity jolt, whether or not it's 100% humidity or not. It can be very annoying. I have fried my share of electrical appliances too by touching them. On the bright side the new flat panel displays and computers are a lot easier on us than those old tube jobs that we used to stare into. Less radiation is better in the home. I had a cell phone but I refuse to get another. From the very beginning I questioned the wisdom of putting a powerful microwave transmitter next to your brain. I guess I could get a Bluetooth earpiece? Cell phones use frequencies that are in the range that you can feel on your skin if they're strong enough. There's been talk of rebuilding America's electrical grid as part of the general transition to cleaner energy, and I'm all for that, provided that it not be more of these above ground towers and powerlines, but rather a system completely that is completely buried nationwide. I've seen these new cordless battery recharger gadgets than that recharge your phones wirelessly. What kind of electrical field is that?See More

Very interesting topic on EMI. The US government is investigating potenti...al electrical problems. NHTSA will conduct an investigation into electronic throttle control systems and potential electromagnetic interference in the nation's fleet of vehicles. Yet the failure to Test for Real World Conditions for EMI, might have been the root cause of problems.

Exponent conducted only limited tests on
vehicles or components in isolation and did not test under varying environmental and driving
conditions, these tests were unlikely to be of value in determining the causes of sudden
      unintended acceleration.

The problem is, the expertise for preventing signal jamming rests in the Department of Defense, not the automakers or their suppliers. Of course, proving that electronic interference is causing SUA in some Toyota vehicles is another story. We need to evaluate the situation not just bashing the successful Japanese automaker but learning from their mistakes.

      Rick,
I have to straighten you out. First of all, this "culture" bashing is out of line by our congressmen after they've committed to the culture of corruption.

165 languages are spoken under our flag AMERICA CAN HANDLE CULTURE. Congr...ess seems to be out of touch. Lady Liberty is not a doormat for a Kenyan phony alone, she stands for everybody. And I'm really sickened that this culture bashing is happening under the leadership of a Kenyan that sends out Holiday cards for Muslims. hes' a disgusting hypocrite, America's political system is a fraud.

I'm not Japanese, I'm American Korean. I did have the privilege of living in Japan for 5 years, I was born there. I've experienced the culture. You haven't. :)

The culture is a perfectionist culture. Everything they do is tainted with perfection. Their chefs are perfectionists, their floors are cleaned by perfectionists, their students study 7 hours every night if not more to get the top grades. Sorry, we don't have that commitment to quality in the U.S.

Do they have "pride"? Yes. But so does the Goldman Sachs culture. As a matter of fact, I'd love to see Blankenfein groveling and tearing up for a public apology under such deep scrutiny the way Toyoda did. I'm mortified, disgusted and appalled by the way our administration is handling this. I'm grossed out even more that they sent you out to shape public opinion against the consumer. When a Japanese CEO bankrupts his company, he commits suicide to save face. At least he's taking responsibility. When an American CEO ruins the American economy, they rob the taxpayers for a bailout. My family is still waiting for a public apology, a recall and tears from Chevy for breaking down on us during a road trip. Where's the NHTSA to defend us?

Look, the consumers on the who figured out how to scope out the quality of the vehicle. The Dealers are American, not Japanese. Toyota hired Americans, they might not make that mistake again since they got cornered for political reasons (see GM). I drive a Honda, my next car may be a Toyota depending on what the newer models are. But if you want to see a true contest, let's see who ends up with the majority of China's market.

Sumi, you are so right on! Glad to see your stance. Though, we are all in this together, and it is not clear how we are to shift the lopsided position of power that resides in the place of gov't and corporations taking the lion's share. I l...ike the title of a UK movie I saw the other day which describes our world today ~ "The Age of Stupid". It is difficult to understand how we are to extricate ourselves from this very complex and doomed path man is own. We most certainly need to take RESPONSIBILITY and SHIFT directions yesterday! It will take millions of points of light working in a concerted effort to create the impetus that can shift it all. It does appear to be an era where Chaos reigns, though I am optimistic we have enough HELP to aid us, if we will merely lay down our egos and put our life into the HIGHER POWER and the agents of support that are waiting to help once we let go of the tight reigns of control so many hold onto. For if there were not LOVE, surely we would perish. Have faith and know that we can make a SHIFT..";-)See More

I know someone who has a recall vehicle, he didn't take it in. He said it might be the way the mat is hooked up. Did not take the car in, said that he never had a problem with it as long as he's had it (over a year now).

Oh by the way,... people on the Toyota group are trying to help the company fix the problem. There are other auto makers that use the same electronic devices that Toyota put into their car.

Sorry about the tangent, I am so offended with America's thuggish political system that I'm having vivid dreams of vomiting journalists.

Which human tribe are you a part of? The problem solving side? Or the worthless-bully side? i think this is where you develop your karma, one side needs a foundation to build from.

Sumi, listen to your chat, this is the birth of it. What we all do is turn around the other way and realize that underlying everything is a good intention, as I am assuming that Sumi's is also. Suicide does not help a thing here.

Back to... the problem, Richard, by all means do your error trapping and handle them wisely in the program, possibly add a magnetic shield device, etc., etc. This is going into the material solution, not the endgame.

Cleaning up all the assumptions behind all of our good intentions would clean up a lot of static! This is where the mistakes are made. When we assume limitation, foul play, lack anywhere, we will run into trouble, and it plays out as we continue to give it gas...

""But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire." From Scriptures...this still speaks to us! Hell fire is in fact what we are already experiencing. We don't have to wait for it! I think we know that Toyota was not plotting against the public in its design! Have we now created a monster? ;)

Very interesting company here: tagged at 'sources'. Am another highly charged with emf. I also abandoned the mobile phone, can't wear wrist watches, and am constantly wrangling with computers and other electrical devices I interact with. On... my wedding day I totally blew the electrics in our house - not once, but twice, with a mere flick of a switch! Then later at the party the whole pavillion and half of Dulwich Village went out when I changed plugs for the D.J. (mind you, the Moon was in aspect to Uranus, the planet of electricity, conjoining the south node (where we're coming from)). So, yes, its good to bring this into focus, DK: there is something about human electricity that is yet to be fully understood; and our interaction with solar-lunar gravitation, flares, other machines, people, planets etc, is cosmically bound to have some influence.
      Great topic ((( ♥ )))

I had come up with a simple solution to the problem. We should use light not electric and copper to transmit data. We need to do this everywhere! In Intangics light is thought of as the data transport layer for information in the universe s...o our systems should follow suit. This way if some major solar flares occur then our communications will not suffer. As it is now an event like the Solar Tempest of 1859 will literally melt the wiring and we will return to simpler times after some chaos less for those that are prepared. This is the most probable of all events that may occur in the near future. This is also the reason I suggested to the world body the idea of decentralization of energy production which had not seemed to occur to anyone. Still management and leadership has not done much. Having documented my inventive process, I am preparing my patent for submission for a light based data bus for the transmission of data in vehicles to avoid EMF interference. See More

    • Rebecca Tozer Richard, decentralization of energy production makes even more sense should 'free energy' devices come into use, as it seems so far they work best on a small scale. A neighborhood or several houses share in the use of it, for example. Of course, it would also decentralize power from the hands of the power companies, and therein lies a ton of resistance.

Yes Rebecca you understand perfectly. There is a new device to be implemented when the right group of people come together to implement it. When the people achieve unity to exert full control over the individuals that occupy positions in go...vernment. When the public can ensure that they can block an individual or small group of individuals from acting in an irrational or self interested manner to the detriment of the whole or gaining to much power or allowing them to cloak things in secrecy. The energy technology can be weaponized and does not contaminate the environment like nuclear weapons which is a deterrent to their actual use. So it cannot be put in the hands of few but only in the hands of the many.See More

There are YouTube videos of Iraqis complaining about lasers that sliced off the top of the bus and beheaded everyone on board in an instant. And another of a suppose it shrink ray, that reduces full-grown men to 3 foot long mummified shrunk...en dried figures, and other weapons that burned off the faces of all the occupants of many cars, without damaging the windshields, or even singeing the hair on the top and back of their heads, just their faces were completely burned past the skull. So war's a time of innovation, and it is clearly obvious that each of these type weapons would take unusually high wattages of electrical power, but apparently the unit providing the power for these various Fry-zappers fits in the back of the Hummer along with the various device it powers? I know a journalist who made a documentary about the lead violinist of the Baghdad Symphony before the war, Patrick, (excuse me I can think of his last name?) But he made another documentary when the English speaking Western educated violinist called him back to Baghdad as soon as the fighting ended, and gave him a tour of the various spots around the Baghdad airport, where the heaviest fighting had occurred, and showed him what evidence remained. There were some shrunken bodies, that looks like burned loaves of bread shaped like men, and some sliced up vehicles, and some still photography, taken the night of the battle, of men in passenger cars with there faces melted off, but more importantly Patrick had a lot of interviews with outraged, but completely believable hospital surgeons, who all had ghastly tales to tell. One bus which was trying to flee the fighting filled with civilians, was turned away at a US checkpoint, and the next thing the bus driver knew was that some sort of Laser Death Ray sliced off the top of his bus beheading all the rows of the passengers, except for a small boy, who was on the floor of the bus at the time, and the driver himself, who was leaning over to do something at the time of the hit, which occurred at lightspeed. In shock he slammed on the accelerator and drove 6 miles to a hospital, where he realized that his left arm was in his lap, it had been sliced off cleaner than by razor, and before he fainted from shock into the arms of the receiving doctors, he noticed his left leg was on the floor, too. The doctors were amazed that he was able to drive to the hospital with one arm and one leg gone with that kind of blood loss. The doctors said US Special Forces teams came in immediately after the battle and took away all of the beheaded bodies and hauled off the sliced up bus. One doctor ended his fiery commentary by saying, “If the Americans think they’re going to win us over with laser weapons and shrink rays, and mind erasing electronic technology, they are sadly mistaken. Just because you have such horrible things doesn’t mean you understand the situation here!” Later when asked about these reports, the then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, admitted that war, indeed, provided opportunities to test out new capacities that had been in development for some time. So I think these weapons are portable and they are using new super batteries or power generator capacitors that sure out power in the ones in the Energizer Bunny. I like to see some of this high-tech be applying to energy security for this country. is the old chicken or the egg question? Was it peaceful fuel cell technology that’s been weaponized, or compact high power supplies for secret weapons not yet big knowledge that is becoming efficient enough for commercial application? I think the egg, or weapon, came firstSee More

The breakdown on the dashboard control panel of the Toyota's reveal a Mitsubishi Chip with access to both the break chip and the accelerator chip. The only thing required for access to these is an antenna tied to the chip to instruct it to ...accelerate instead of receiving the data on the wheel turning angles and speeds. This ability to override the system had to be built in.

Optical communications have been around for a long time (man made). Data is already carried on light waves over optical fiber and DOC computers and optical switches have been part of telecommunications since optical fiber was invented.

The weaponizing of communications technology is a combination of haptics software, hardware architecture, GPS location and embedded and/or implanted technology in or near a person.

The power companies have the ability to surge or cut back electricity to any location and also to access computers and mobile devices through signals carried on hybrid networks using combinations with electrical wiring.

The bus was attacked with a laser gun, probably from an airship, and the plans for it were on CNN in 2005.

Safety is not helped by the dissemination of these technologies to everyone and the use of them should never be experimental on human subjects. That right there is the problem... Human experiments.
