Martha Gatubo, a woman farmer, is breaking gender barriers. Gatubo maintains a half-acre of coffee trees in the village of Maura, Kenya. Unlike many women in the developing world she owns the land she farms.

Kenya coffee is highly prized with coffee aficionados.

The price for Kenyan coffee may be competitive in the global market; however, farmers get a tiny fraction of what the final product fetches.

There are organizations working on issues of fair trade which are looking for solutions to this problem. ICRW is working to make sure women have the same access as men to fertilizer, better seeds, time-saving tools, credit, land and other assets. Our research demonstrates investments in women farmers will enhance agricultural productivity, reduce poverty and hunger, and reap multiple dividends for families, communities and countries.
