Great pic! Besides the new habitat, how will the Komodos be integrated into the other zoo programs? Will they be part of the animal show? Will they be available for small group encounters? Will they be in any programs where they can be touched, or is that too dangerous?

Hi Ken -

That would be too dangerous, as Komodo dragons are carnivores. Did you know that saliva samples of wild dragons were analyzed and were found to contain 57 different strains of bacteria, many which can cause deadly infections.

Hands off, then.

How many keepers do they have, and will any of them be out answering questions this weekend?

Yeah, put them in a petting zoo and someone would loose an arm or get beaten with their mighty tail. Not much fun.

There are four reptile keepers involved in the care of the komodo dragons at the Phoenix Zoo. We will be in front of the exhibit at various times throughout the weekend for a little Q&A with visiting members!
