400 Years Ago Today:

July 30, 1610: Astronomer Galileo Galilei became the first person to observe the rings of Saturn.

    • Deb Wyrzykowski I love Saturn, of course I love Earth more, but its so breathtaking and those rings and colors...what if earth had rings and we could see them...
      July 30, 2010 at 6:05am
    • Robert Gorman Look at the light filtering at the north. That's pretty sweet. The rings are filtering out blue, so that's what you see. Thus the rings are mainly water.

    • Shelly Conley The first person documented to date in historical archives perhaps, however, I do not believe that Galileo is the first person to observe the rings of Saturn, your thoughts?
      July 30, 2010 at 6:53am
    • Katarina Maryla Glodek Glodek yes and he wasnt shure for a first time what is this - he was thinking the Saturn has sometnik like "ears" even before died he didnt find out what was that- the rings.

    • Stephens Susan I was absolutely amazed when I saw Saturns Rings thru a telescope !!!! I am sure the percentage of people who have been blessed to see that is very low : ( . I was really blessed that a scientice shared this with some of us at the Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff Az..: ) Wow !!!! Bravo!! thru his own telescope.. : )

‎@Katarina Maryla Glodek Glodek is correct. Galileo's low-power telescope did not allow him to see Saturn with enough resolution to define the rings. All he could see was something each side of the planet, and he never found out what they w...ere.
There is evidence that Galileo saw Neptune on 28 December 1612, when it was in conjunction with Jupiter, without realising what it was. Once again, his little telescope lacked the power to clearly see the planet.
