Grosse Ile, QC: site of the Celtic cross monument to the thousands of Irish immigrants who died crossing the Atlantic to Canada during the Great Famine.

Also formerly a quarantine centre for European immigrants who came later, and were confined here for "disinfection" while awaiting entry to Canada.

During the Second World War, Grosse Ile became a centre for secret biological warfare experiments, run by the American, British and Canadian governments.
