Pakistan has been hit by the worst flooding the country has seen in 71 years. Almost one million people have been affected, including hundreds of thousands of children. Hundreds have died, and most of the stricken areas are cut off and under water, thus limiting access and relief efforts. The floods have also caused major damage to roads, bridges and many thousands of homes as well as critical water and sanitation facilities. The estimated death toll in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province is now over 1,000 and several hundred others have been injured. UNICEF is working hard to provide some relief, in conjunction with its partners UNICEF have set up nine medical camps in Swat and are providing emergency medicines, water treatment tablets and jerry cans. UNICEF is also supporting the local authorities in providing clean drinking water and emergency shelter for 20,000 families in Peshawar and Charsadda.
