First Snowfall (graupel) October 12th, 2012

We saw our first "snow" of the season at the airport today in Binghamton. This was video we shot as graupel fell at the office. Graupel (http://amsglossary.allenpress.com/glossary/search?id=graupel1) forms when snowflakes fall and bump into super cooled water droplets. As this happens the snowflake becomes rimed with water and instead of looking like a snowflake anymore, it looks more like a mini-snowball. Graupel is often confused for hail or even sleet.
