Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Lots of tree care folks came out to Schenley Park this morning for a workshop on pruning techniques. There's a lot of cleanup to be done now that the snow is starting to melt.

pittsburghparks.wordpress.com
It’s not every day that you stumble across a gathering of 60+ people whose main focus is maintaining the health of our trees. But it’s also not every day that Pittsburgh gets a record snowfall, leaving the city’s trees to bear a heavy load that not all of them could withstand.

Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Our own Mike Sexauer shares his family's memories of Mellon Square in its early years:

pittsburghparks.wordpress.com
Fifty-five years ago this February, a tree was planted in downtown Pittsburgh. Not an extraordinary feat by today’s eco-friendly standards, but something of an oddity in a downtown with a pattern of smoke-choked ...

Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Winter photos of Schenley Park...from the 1920s!

pittsburghparks.wordpress.com
One of the fun parts about working at the Parks Conservancy is occasionally stumbling across some cool old photos of the parks while looking for something in your office. When we uncover some buried treasure, we pass it among our co-workers and marvel, “I can’t believe it used to look like that!”

I think the idea would be to bring Panther Hollow Lake back to this standard. You can vaguely see the boathouse in one of the photos, and it is a long-term goal of ours to bring back the boathouse after the lake has been restored to safe water quality.

Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy A little recap from our Urban EcoSteward winter gathering, attended by 60+ of our best and brightest park volunteers!

wp.me
This past Saturday, we held our annual Urban EcoSteward winter gathering, when we invite all current or interested EcoStewards to one of the parks to talk about the past year’s accomplishments, announce plans for the new year, and generally just relieve cabin fever by getting out for a while.
