It wasn't very long ago that all meals were made with local ingredients, because they had to be, and were never cooked by strangers, Mollie Katzen told a standing-room-only crowd at Berkeley's David Brower Center last night.

Progressive Jewish Alliance -- Bay Area An op-ed from PJA about the shootings in Tel Aviv, Tu b'av, and the struggle for Marriage Equality
www.jewishjournal.com
2009/08/11 - This year, the Saturday following Tisha B’Av, Shabbat Nachamu (the “Sabbath of Consolation”), was shattered by violence as a masked gunman opened fire on a crowd of teenagers gathered at the Tel Aviv Gay and Lesbian Youth Center. ...

Progressive Jewish Alliance -- Bay Area Tonight begins Tu B'Av, "Jewish Valentine's Day," and PJA is thinking about the thousands of LGBT couples who have been denied recognition of their love, particularly in the wake of Prop 8, and those who have been victims of hateful repression, such as the recent shooting in Tel Aviv. To honor Tu B'Av with us, wear whi...te in solidarity with LGBT couples across CA, and visit our site below to find out more ways to act.

Tu B’What?
Often referred to as the “Jewish Valentine’s Day,” Tu B’Av is a biblically-rooted holiday popular in Israel, when couples marry, reaffirm vows, and dedicate love songs to each other on the radio. In the wake of the passage of California’s Proposition 8, which outlawed marriage for same-sex couples, Tu B’Av s...erves as a source of inspiration for those American Jews who believe in Marriage Equality. After all, a significant majority of us did oppose the proposition last November.
That’s why Progressive Jewish Alliance and Jewish Mosaic have launched a campaign to educate and connect Jews to this critical issue.

How can you take action?
• Attend this event now and invite others to come!
• Join PJA’s email list by Monday, August 3rd, and you will receive a Tu B’Av email you can forward to your loved ones. Tell your friends and family you love them and wish them a Tu B’Av Sameach or “Happy Tu B’Av,” by asking them to join the fight for marriage equality.
• Wear white in solidarity with LGBT couples throughout California or go to www.whiteknot.org to buy a white ribbon for equality.
Why white? Go to the “Why Tu B’Av” page on www.pjatubav.weebly.com and learn more.

Since June 2008, hotel workers at HEI Le Meridian and the Fisherman’s Wharf Hyatt have been calling upon management to respect their decision to unionize through majority sign-up. Most other hotels in San Francisco, including other Hyatt hotels, have already adopted this system. After their attempts for recognition wer...e repeatedly denied, the workers presented management with a signed petition calling for a boycott of the hotels.
The Progressive Jewish Alliance would like to invite you to Banquet in the Streets, an opportunity to honor courageous local hotel workers at HEI Le Meridian and the Fisherman’s Wharf Hyatt and celebrate fair and just working conditions. We respect the worker-led boycott - In the eyes of Judaism’s broad ethical tradition, working conditions at these hotels are not kosher.
Come ready for music, light nosh and toasting the workers at this family friendly cocktail-style party!
