I heard the program, it was interesting but I think he does not or does not want to understand the arguments of Harris, Dawkins and Hitchens. Just saying they are like the religious fundamentalists is not credible (Ad Hominem), and most of their arguments are about eliminating the religious claim to be above criticism.

He talks about how Stephen J. Gould and Carl Sagan exemplified ways to avoid being "such a scientist," by a...

Darrel Ray talks about religion being like a virus, elaborating on Richard Dawkins' concept of the meme. He explains why the metaphor of God belief being like a virus of the mind is so useful. He details how religion is communicable, and propagated through vectors, just like biological pathogens, an...

Evan, I don't know if Dawkins being a leading intellectual is less controversial than Jesus being the Son of God, and neither do you. How do we decide such a thing? By book sales? By opinion polls? Certainly there is more important work than Dawkins' being done by other intellectuals all over the world which goes largely unnoticed since they don't ... See Morepublish best-sellers. All we know is that the sort of people who answer "top intellectual" polls in certain magazines think Dawkins is a leading intellectual. This argument from authority (or, rather from public opinion) as you pointed out, proves nothing. It certainly doesn't prove my comment was fatuous. The only way to prove my comment was fatuous would be to engage me in debate on each issue where I think Dawkins has gone badly wrong. But neither of us (I assume) wants to do that.

When I said Dawkins was dumb I wasn't formulating an argument. I was merely stating my conviction. If I would have said that Dawkins is dumb because a certain group of people who read a certain magazine said so, that would have been a poor argument on my part. But that, of course, was not my argument. The reverse of it, however, was your argument (hinted at however darkly).

PS: I would like to concede something. I do think Richard Dawkins is intelligent--highly intelligent. On this particular point, however, I think he's being rather dumb.

Barry F Seidman Here's something secular humanists really need to think about as they parade Dawkins and Hitchens around as "humanists." This is a far more humanist view on religion, atheism, and liberalism than either of those two can ever offer our movement. And yes, this guy IS an atheist.. of the most sincere kind... a Marxist a...theist!

Point of Inquiry New Point of Inquiry -- Chris Mooney on scientific illiteracy and the New Atheists: He shares his criticisms of the New Atheists and explains why their attacks against religious moderates work counter to the goal of scientific literacy. He recounts his experiences as an atheist activist while in college, and how his vi...ews have changed about campus freethought activism since that time.

He explores other underlying causes of scientific illiteracy, including our educational system, the media's dysfunctional treatment of science, and growing anti-science movements such as the climate deniers and vaccine skeptics. And he details concrete actions that science advocates can take in order to increase scientific literacy.

Maughn Rollins Gregory Happy paraskevidekatriaphobia (fear of Friday the 13th) day! Why don’t we, the skeptical community, make every Friday the 13th a holiday for skepticism? We could stage some public anti-superstition demonstrations like walking under ladders, breaking mirrors, inviting the evil eye, and othewise making fun of ghosts, ang...els, devils, crystals, UFOs, divining rods, amulets, crop circles, Big Foot, etc. - whatever is locally relevant for us. Is anyone already doing this?

I'm for it. Aside from billboards, and law suits, ridicule seems to be one of our best point gainers lately. And since reasoning with 'the believers of nonsense' certainly doesn't work, poking a little fun at the silliness of belief-based thinking is possibly a step in the right direction.
