Donna Powell River 50-Mile Local Food Challenge: NOT AN ACRE WITHOUT DEBATE - HELP PROTECT PRIME LANGFORD (VICTORIA) FARMLAND
It isn’t the land that has given BC’s Agricultural Land Commission it’s dirty image – it’s practices... like denying the public a voice in a multi-party application involving approximately 290 acres of Victoria prime farmland, virtually all the ALR in Langford.
For more than a year the local community has been pressing for a fair and inclusive public process in an issue that is sullied by issues like threats of physical violence against agricultural advocates, a member of the Agricultural Advisory Committee voting and speaking on the project even though he, Tom Atherton, is one of the property owners.
The City Council has denied requests for posting of information on its web site where the public can access it, and the Agricultural Land Commission has scheduled to vote on these applications on December 17th & 18th – ONE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS – without providing a hearing.
The Commission has met with the developers and the property owners who want to take their land out of the ALR.
This is a corrupt, conspiratorial process that underlies the current dismantling of the ALR throughout BC. Farmland and food security are NOT municipal issues. Our foodlands are a provincial resource. The mandate of the Agricultural Land Commission (although you wouldn’t know it from their actions these days) is the preservation of farmland.
Tell Premier Gordon Campbell that British Columbians deserve a public hearing on Langford farmland

"It is rare that we have a chance to speak directly to national decisionmakers about creating laws that can help us boost our local economy andchange the strategy for economic development. Powell River is at theleading edge of local food economics, green economics, and local business development and we have a chance to speak out. We'dlike to see a strong showing to make sure our voices are heard. We ask that you come to the forum with a concise list of ideas, or one idea, that you can raise in the discussion. No speeches please because timeis limited. At the end of the discussion Mr. Brison will make statements to provide feedback and let us know how he will follow up onour ideas." Name of the group to be “Transition Town Powell River” rather than “Transition Powell River”. This was felt to make it easier to distinguish us from women’s transition/shelter groups, while still keeping the Transition Initiative brand.
