DRBY A friend of DRBY, Gwhyneth Chen, who integrates her spiritual practice and her music is performing at Berkeley Buddhist Monastery this Sunday. In such an small and intimate venue as Berkeley Monastery, the performance should be pretty amazing (as it has been in my previous experience).

We request the honor of your presence on Sunday Nov. 22nd, 2009 at 3:30 PM, to enjoy the deeply spiritual music of Frederic Chopin, played by a performer who has integrated her Buddhist practice and her musical expression.

I've always had the impression that American kids communicate more with their parents than Chinese ones... am I mistaken? For those of us with Chinese upbringing, I think we just bite the bullet and go on.

I don't think so. It's probably on equal footing if not the other way. The Chinese parents in general sacrifice more for their kids. Unlike the older generations who had to labour more to make a living, the "younger" generation of parents tend to have better jobs, be more informed and share more of the same things as their kids. Despite teenage rebellions, the Chinese parents and the kids tend to be closer, treasure family more and talk more.

DRBY Great article about the writer's journey to eating less meat, and what that meant. Meat taste good, and comes with cultural memories....

Changing what we eat and letting tastes fade from memory create a kind of cultural loss, a forgetting.

To me, vegetarianism is still the most absolute ideal. I respect the concept of vegetarianism immdensely. I think it's a change of mindset - to me, fruits are the best fastfood from nature! Who needs MaDonalds...

Yup! The article gives some insight into how interwoven food is with culture, history, memory, and taste. So, it's hard to untangle all just for veggie dishes, especially when there's no vegetarian food culture. That's why developing yummy veggie substitute is still important.

DRBY Interesting. Wonder how widespread meditation actually is in the US prison population. Saw the documentary, my impression is that they were still a tiny minority. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/09/prison.meditation/index.html

In his darkest moment, Kenneth Brown lost it all. His wife and kids, the housebroken dog, the vacation home on Cape Cod all vanished when he was sent to prison for an arson in 1996.
