The gifts I've given this year have been almost entirely handmade. It makes me feel so good to give "custom" gifts that I've made myself, and I'm having a pretty good time on Etsy, too. It's all good...no, it's all wonderful!

I fully understand what you're saying Dee, I've just been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and some days the pain in my hands is unbearable...but I refuse to let it stop me from my needlework. I just do it when I can, and slower. Hang in there...

Thanks ladies, I will switch and try the bamboo and see how it goes. I know that working with wool over acrylic, my hands and fingers feel bettr. I am trying to knit up scarves for gifts for the needy and I'm not sure if I will get as many done as I hoped. I just knit and pray with hope that I can finish on time.

Have worked with a wool and soy blend that was absolutely wonderful to work with. Not as much itchy as with pure wool and an incredible feel to the finished product.

I have worked with the bamboo needles for about 15 or more years and wouldn't go back to the other needles for anything. My Mom had arthritis really bad and all she used was the bamboo and it sure kept her hands nimble

Let me just chime in in favor of bamboo needles, too. They are lighter than the aluminum, easier for me to hold, and my work doesn't slip around on them so much (but the stitches still slip off easily when they should)! I have arthritis in my hands, too, but I'd hate to give up knitting.

I like bamboo needles much better as well. I cannot stand the feel of the aluminum onces against my hands. The bamboo is much more comfortable.

And I prefer the aluminum ones; I don't like the feel of wood. I don't use wooden spoons either. My thanks to God for making us all different.

Carpal tunnel and fibromyalgia. I'll be okay for a while, but then if I do too much or go too fast, my hands let me know. It's better than it was for a long time, though, so I'm trying not to overdo it.

Try using a knitting machine to supplement your hand knitting and crocheting. The machine can do most of the basic work, and then you can focus on the finer details and things a machine won't do. It's great for skirts, sweater backs, and sleeves. You can still hand knit the ribbing and sweater front. I just wish I could buy time to do all the projects I want to do.

Handmade Especially for You

Leslye Borden has taken her passion for knitting and crocheting beyond her own personal use by creating an organization that brings a bit of joy to abused women. Handmade Especially for You distributes special scarves to women and children in shelters. Presently, there is a request to the organization for 1,000 scarves for Thanksgiving baskets and another 2,000 for Christmas baskets. A handmade gift can be a small step toward building self-esteem that is so necessary during the healing process for women who have been abused.

Leslye's hints for creating scarves are:

1. Use soft yarn (for comfort).
2. Pick happy colors.
3. Make them four to five inches wide.
4. Make them at least 60 inches long.
5. Use open-weave stitch if possible (so they can be used in warm weather climates).
6. Add some novelty yarn or ribbon to make them special.

The intention of making these scarves is to provide a gift of comfort to someone who may have never received a gift before and to show that someone cares.

You can read more about Leslye Borden and the story of Handmade Especially for You online at HandMadeEspecially.org. Her Web site also gives information about starting a local chapter. If you would like to mail scarves directly to her, please send to:
