Museum of Science, Boston Check out some photos of our new friends at the Live Animal Center! Aren't they little?

Welcome Northern Red-bellied Cooters to the Museum’s Live Animal Center. As part of a head start program, these colorful little guys will be staying with us this winter! Native only to Plymouth County, MA this species is endangered on both the Federal and State level. H...ead starting began in the 1980s when it was discovered there were virtually no hatchlings or young cooters! Today, nests are protected with wire screen and hatchlings are collected as they emerge. About ¼ are kept for head starting and the rest are released into ponds near the nests. The Museum has been involved in this powerful program since 1989 and so far the mortality rate of hatchlings has been reduced from 100% to 5%! Make sure to check back for updates!

I always get the orange red and white snake mixed up. Once is harmless and one is quite poisonous! I'd better look for the podcast!
