GetUp! **Campaign Update** Send them to Copenhagen

The good news is we've raised enough money so far to send two Pacific Islanders to next week's climate negotiations in Copenhagen. Unfortunately we're way short of our target of sending five impressive Pacific delegates from a range of countries hardest hit by climate change.

U...nfortunately, the nations most affected by climate change can't afford to send large delegations to argue for their country's very survival - especially given the costs in getting from the Pacific to Copenhagen. But together, we can work together to send compelling people who otherwise wouldn't get a say.

We've found passionate, articulate and knowledgeable Pacific Islanders to share their personal stories about the impacts of climate change, but neither they (nor their governments) can afford to send them to the negotiations.

Hey 'Getup' how about narrowing your focus on Copenhagen, and refocus on things a little closer to home, i.e. internet filtering. We can all do our own personal bit to help reduce carbon emissions, but unless we have a strong united front, Conroy and his goons are going to take away our civil liberties and degrade our internet services.

GetUp! **Campaign Alert** Help us send a delegation of young Pacific Islanders to Copenhagen. These people are facing the threat of losing their entire home nations. It's a message all world leaders need to hear at Copenhagen - where a global deal is needed for the Pacific Islands' very survival.

People-power can get these voi...ces to Copenhagen; their stories can convince the world to act. Can you chip in $50 or $100 to make it happen?

GetUp members have a proud history of getting marginalised voices heard on issues that affect them. Now our help is needed to get voices heard on an issue that affects us all.

Also agree with you Benjamin. Indigenous Australians and their homelessness issues need to be seriously addressed, not to mention the myriad of other issues they are facing.

GetUp! **Video Report-Back** We've put together a video to say thanks!

GetUp had a massive day of climate change action on Monday, with an ad in The Australian, a press conference with the Kevin Rudd we'd like to hear and a delegation of amazing GetUp volunteers meeting with Senators and MPs in Parliament House.

With the real ...world leaders shrinking from their responsibilities in the lead-up to Copenhagen, we need to do all we can to remind them why they are there - to lead us into a safe climate future. Perhaps we should send our impersonator to Copenhagen instead of the real PM?!

On November 16, 2009, GetUp members took the campaign for climate action from their communities to Parliament House. With our climate partners the ACFand ACTU, our team held over 50 meetings with Senators, MPs and advisors in one day.

GetUp! **Campaign Alert** We're stepping up our fight against the polluter lobby! As MPs make their way back to Parliament next week, we'll be confronting them with a huge newspaper ad countering the polluter lobby's fear-mongering and showing that cutting emissions creates jobs. Check out our ad and chip in to help us get it into The Australian next Monday!

GetUp! **Myth-busting Action** It's time to tell the truth on asylum seekers.
We've prepared a myth-busting factsheet to help make you a champion of tolerance and truth for asylum seekers. Download it or take it to your cup day lunch, and start a conversation.
Your voice has the power to change the minds of politicians who thin...k they have to take a tough stance on asylum seekers, and the media who think irresponsible and sensationalist coverage is what the Australian people expect.

The most damaging myth in this debate is that held by our leaders - that Australians are intolerant towards asylum seekers. Be a part of changing the conversation about asylum seekers in your community.

GetUp! **Campaign Alert** The coal lobby has brought out the big guns, by blanketing the airwaves in coal country marginal seats with a new ad campaign, in
an attempt to undermine our transition to a clean-energy economy and
strong-arm politicians into giving them extra handouts.
The same man behind the 'Kevin07' brand is runni...ng their campaign, but we won't let this slick PR effort go unanswered. Chip in to get our parody ad on the air and cut through their lies with a voice for Australians who want to cut emissions and create jobs!

Yes Chris climate change has happened before. There have been a couple of Ice Ages. Do you think you can live through an Ice Age Chris? I mean a real one not the cartoon one. Do you know how much money the government pays to the coal industry of our tax money Chris? Do you really think that pumping this much shit into the environment is not going to have an effect?

Chris Toland - Are you fucking kidding me? Yes climate change is natural, but the rate that it is happening is outrageous. Humans are the only species in the world to destroy the environment it lives in. At the rate we're going, we'll have greatly diminished species in both flora and fauna, and oil will be dried up in the near future, with its price skyrocketing before it does.

Intelligent people stopped arguing the existence of climate change some time ago Chris. It's time we stopped silly excuses and all got off our collective butts. I'll be supporting this ad campaign. Once again GetUp, you're doing a wonderful job.

the uninformed simplistic notions of the likes of Chris Toland (above) drive me NUTS. of course Earth has experienced dramatic climate changes over billions of years. but people like this forget that it's the RATE OF CHANGE that puts the smoking gun squarely in the hands of humans. the GHG effect is very simple: the more CO2 you put in the ... See Moreatmosphere (which we have been doing for a century) can be measured by a high school science student. the effect is to warm the atmosphere, and produce climate extremes of all kinds. the long-term effect can be runaway climate change that could take centuries or millenia to undo. what is so fuckin hard to understand about this???

and as for the Liberal Party deadshits - howTF can you debate a CTS when you don't even believe the overwhelming king-tide of people smarter than most of us (scientists working in many different climate/environment fields) who tell us this is OUR problem? and all the while totally ignoring the issue of 'Peak Oil' - the virtual certainty that we are... See More within decades of running out of oil? all the coal in the world is no substitute for the oil we use for everything from transport to toothbrushes. we don't actually need to run out of oil to suffer major economic turmoil - just enough drop in supply to escalate prices beyond all recognition. and simultaneously ignoring the enormous business opportunities in moving to renewable energy sources.

GetUp! The Government has just announced the results of its National Human Rights Consultation: Australians demand we join the rest of the democratic world and protect our rights through a Human Rights Act. Over 35,000 Australians told the Consultation their views - the vast majority asking for a Human Rights Act. Now it's ti...me for the rest of us to encourage the Government to adopt the community's recommendations. Sign our petition here: www.getup.org.au/campaign/EnactOurAct http://bit.ly/11LmAn

I have just signed GetUp's petition to secure a Human Rights Act for Australia after I saw that:

1. Without a Oz Human Rights bill, big business has, over decades, gained contractual rights to huge proportions of Australian Natural resources for a pittance - incl. our commonly owned & very precious fresh-water reserves & environmental flows - This happened because Australia has weak & self-serving ALP & "Coalition" parties, placing corporate rights well above the rights of humans & ecosystems to survive

2. Consultations found over 85% of Australians support an Act... See More

This Oz Human Rights Act will inject spine to the otherwise spineless big parties, so .. take a minute to snd this potent Get Up message to the law makers

Unfortunately, with a lack of party majority in the Senate, Senator Fielding wields power to swing either way in any debate, so the current government need him.
