Reconciling Ministries Network

Reconciling Ministries Network The Rev. Troy Plummer, executive director of the Reconciling Ministries Network, a movement supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender United Methodists, believes church members are simply lagging a bit behind their Protestant counterparts. “The United Methodist Church in the United States clearly follows the tr...ajectory towards inclusiveness mirrored by our North American sister denominations—the UCC, Episcopalian, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches,” Plummer said. “Our timing may differ, but God’s dance with us will be the same.” The next generation is “already there,” he added, pointing to the majority votes approving inclusive membership and gay and lesbian clergy by the United Methodist Student Forum and Global Young People’s convocation in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Troy is right. If one's issues with the denomination stopped with sexual orientation inclusiveness, it's worth it to soldier on with the denomination. Unfortunately, for some of us, the entire controversy over sexual orientation - like the earlier ones over race and gender - merely distract from the real issues, which are much, much larger.

I am so proud of this website. Its definately a first step. But, still strange that the UMC can vote that talking about the horrors of "homophobia and discrimination" is OK, but actually allowing gay people to "be gay" or become officials in the UMC is not discrimination shows that Methodists have some strides to make!

Reconciling Ministries Network One of the joys as well as challenges of "downsizing" as one attempts to settle into what will probably be his/her last home is to re-discover books that have been forgotten. "It" was in one of the boxes that had been set aside to be opened at a later date. When it was time to open that box, "It" peered out at me. "It"... was NOAH'S CURSE.

Peter, do you not have Faith that we make the world a better place through the UMC? It takes a drop of water to carve out a rock - but eventually the rock has a big hold in it! We are that drop of water - and any good we gain for the opposition to Homophobia and Heterosexism is a gain for the LGBTQ community!!!

Reconciling Ministries Network There is an official position in The United Methodist Church on gay and lesbian sexuality, and that states the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. The Judicial Council, the denomination’s highest court, in a ruling released Nov. 2 said that the Baltimore-Washington Annual (regional) Confe...rence went too far in adopting its own statement declaring “a more authentic and truthful representation of The United Methodist Church” is that “we disagree” on gay and lesbian issues. “The effect of the Baltimore-Washington resolution is to negate the church’s clearly stated position as reflected in current disciplinary language,” the council wrote. “Moreover, the Baltimore–Washington resolution attempts to articulate a new and different standard of church belief using language that has been specifically rejected by the General Conference.”

Reconciling Ministries Network For the past two years, local churches who affirm gays have mounted a counteroffensive. Their members stand near the conservatives, holding signs saying that God accepts gays just as they are. "We are letting people know that there is an alternative message," said Lisa Costen of Atlanta. She attends Trinity United Meth...odist Church, which affirms gays though the United Methodist denomination has not taken that step. The battling groups reflect much of what is happening inside American Christianity, as churches grapple with how to treat gay members. Some reject them. Some welcome them with open arms. Others are trying to find a balance.

Reconciling Ministries Network My youth group randomly started talking about homosexuality one week. As we began to ask what God must think of gays and lesbians, one of my youth group leaders responded that God sent AIDS to the world to send a clear message to the gays and their sinfulness. I was furious. I yelled at her and told her that her statem...ent was utterly ignorant and reflected no knowledge of how the disease is actually transmitted and how it harms all people. My youth group leader told me that science didn’t matter if God is still Judge. I left the group early that day just fuming and pissed.

"if God is still Judge"

Yes, GOD is the judge, not some idiotic youth group leader. And until God judges, good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people. But it isn't bad to use science to prevent bad things from happening.

Reconciling Ministries Network Today I shared a meal with two UMC preachers who are trying to navigate riptides of fear within their congregations. They had disagreed with each other about voting for the "All Means All" amendment, and they both disagree with me about what I see as a positive roll for Reconciling United Methodists advocating for full... inclusion of LGBTQ persons. Both have welcomed gay and lesbian couples and baptized their children; both hear from members who fear this will lead to lots of gay couples joining (Read that as "too many.") Our meal was a first effort to discuss our visions of local churches and the global UMC in a small, friendly, but disagreeing group.

I always find the argument that lots of gay couples will join once a church of any denomination becomes Open & Affirming baffling. While it is wonderful, I have not seen it make a major difference in the majority of churches. I served an O & A church last year, and I was the only gay person there...LOL. I currently serve a merged set of UMC ... See Morechurches that are not O & A, but by hiring me 2 years ago are living the mission of O & A, and I know at some point they will get there.

Part of the hard reality I see within the Methodist church (being a Disciples clergy member) is that we struggle with living the "Open Minds - Open Hearts - Open Doors" mission of our church. While it is easy to put a mission statement on paper, we have a harder time living it .

I'm glad to see that you are having these conversations. Hearts and minds will continue to be changed one person at a time.

Our congregation is fearful as well. However, as far as I know I'm the only out gay person and they fully accept me. If we can just get past the fear of the unknown!!!

Well put Martha....FEAR is entirely too powerful of an emotion! Isn't love supposed to me so much stronger? "Love one another as I have loved you."

What is the fear about? LGBTQ is not an infectious disease. So it couldn't/shouldn't be contamination. Is it a fear of rejection by other congregations? Standing up for right before it is popular is a crucifiable virtue, but a virtue nonetheless. Is it that people will leave the congregation? That has happened before for other reasons but where ... See Morethere is love, others will come. Oops but they may be LGBTQ, huh. Is it that they may find out that LGBTQs are normal human beings? Then folks will have to wonder about themselves, their children, their friends. They may also find the wonder in themselves as their own humanity expands. Better yet, they will have a new experience of the abundance of God's grace. I guess that's a frightful thing.

Reconciling Ministries Network About 200, representing nearly every faith, have formed D.C. Clergy United for Marriage Equality. On Thursday night, more than 100 of them gathered at Asbury United Methodist Church in Northwest Washington to support a bill that D.C. Council member David A. Catania (I-At Large) introduced this month that would allow same-sex couples to marry.

www.washingtonpost.com
Although ministers opposed to same-sex marriage in the Disrict have campaigned more vigorously, a growing number of religious leaders are mobilizing to support the proposal.

The Washington Post has been hoodwinked by its own reporter. If he had acutally attended the Thursday evening event he would have known that the sactuary at Asbury Church, which seats 500, was overflowing. He sat in a chair, read various press releases, and made a few telephone calls. And one wonders why their circulation is down.

Reconciling Ministries Network I am sitting in an office at Foundry United Methodist Church. Six blocks down the road, President Obama is signing legislation adding sexual orientation and gender identity to our hate crimes laws. It has been 30 years since passage of the original hate crimes law (1979) and 13 years since the last failed attempt at amendment.

Don't think much of having hate crime legislation on the statute books, but since it is, there is no reason to exclude LGBTQ persons. I applaud President Obama's signing of the extension.
