Noa Kalakaua A good reminder that the money the government borrows has to be paid back (with interest), just like the money you and I borrow. Great fact from this story...

"With the national debt now topping $12 trillion, the White House
estimates that the government’s tab for servicing the debt will exceed
$700 billion a year in 201...9, up from $202 billion this year, even if
annual budget deficits shrink drastically. Other forecasters say the
figure could be much higher. In concrete terms, an additional
$500 billion a year in interest expense would total more than the
combined federal budgets this year for education, energy, homeland
security and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

The ultralow interest rates the U.S. has been paying on its colossal debt may not last much longer, and the White House estimates that the tab will exceed $700 billion a year in 2019.

Noa Kalakaua Great (and very brief) story on the perils of federal overspending. Factoid... every man, woman in child in this country owes $39,000 to holders of federal debt. If you reduce that to taxpayers, the number is well over $100,000. Bayh says the effort must be bipartisan... or we must do away with the parties...

America's national debt cannot grow beyond a limit imposed by Congress known as the "debt ceiling."

Noa Kalakaua What does persistent government overspending mean to you, me, Dupree, and the stock market? Charles Hugh Smith offers his perspective. It's not pretty. It must change.

I'm not saying the stock market will crash, only that if it had any relation to the real U.S. economy that it should crash, and soon.

Further thoughts... the problem is a misalignment of incentives. No one in office today gains anything by cutting spending, even if that's what everyone needs.

Noa Kalakaua Constitutional Amendment calling for TERM LIMITS introduced yesterday. Unfortunately, sponsor calls it a "recipe for defeat." Please call your representatives. We must begin supporting this now. If you can make this happen, I don't have to run for president.

Noa Kalakaua "The fact that Democrats have sufficient majorities in both houses of
Congress to pass whatever they want but are struggling to pass anything
that would make a decisive and conclusive break with the past suggests
the problem in Washington is not "partisan politics". It's a political
system and culture so crowded with corpo...rate lobbyists, that it is
apparently incapable of fulfilling the wishes of the people even when –
as with a public option in healthcare – that is what they want." -- Gary Younge, the Guradian
